My 80 year old mom needs her house painted. It's a 2 story (raised ranch), with an attached garage. The front is brick, with columns. One painted side is peeling, the rest isn't. No plans to sell soon, unfortunately (I wish she would...she's alone in a 10 room house.)

She got an estimate of close to $4,000 to paint, and is a little blown away. (She's also getting a new kitchen floor, and has some other house expenses.) My niece's husband suggested that he would scrape and paint the one side. Good idea or bad idea? The rest of the house would have to be power-washed or something, I would guess.

I know that several years ago when we had our small one story house painted it was close to 2000. I know we have some painters here. Hope they see this and can help.

snuggles, thanks. I wasn't as surprised as she was...she was totally clueless and wasn't expecting it to be that much...my dad was extremely handy, and they never hired anyone to do anything. It's been hard for her to have to turn the work over to someone else AND pay for it! The thing is, reasonable price or not, it's more than someone on Social Security can pay right now, esp with the other things in the house that need to be done. So if an alternative will work for now, and still maintain a quality look, it would help.

I used to work construction & I can tell you, as long as the paint on the other walls is in good condition, I wouldn't see a prob with just stripping the one side & painting it... as long as the c o l o r s match!

I sure understand all of that. My dad was very handy and it was very hard on him to pay people to do something he thought he could do. Bless their hearts.... Hope you find somebody around here that knows the answer.

I'm with JoNo. We just finished an addition to our house. Several painters insisted that the whole house needed to be painted.......that they couldn't just paint the addition. One guy said that was nonsense and that, as long as we knew the exact colors and brand name, he could do the addition alone. We went with him and it turned out great! You can't tell what's new and what's not. Good luck to your mom.
