house paint color question

We are getting the house ready to sell (need to move closer to mil due to her health.)

I interviewed a Realtor last week that mentioned wall/trim colors. She said blue is out even though it is a real pale blue. She also said no white or off white. She even said the doors/trim should not be any form of white.

My question is why no white or form of white trim?

That's odd; our realtor friends always recommend white or off white trim; at least inside. But now that I think about it, we live in a pretty "upscale" area and almost all the houses have white or offwhite trim outside, too. Before repainting everything, I'd talk to another couple of realtors.

DH and I have been considering moving to a different neighborhood and have looked at a lot of newer, upscale houses lately. Every house we have looked at has had white woodwork on the inside and most has had white or ivory trim on the outside. Walls have generally been some form of beige.

Non-white woodwork would be a major turnoff to me.

Really why go to the expense of painting unless it is necessary because of dent/dings? Whoever buys your home will likely paint to their taste anyway. We moved into a home that the couple repainted all off white to move. They did not paint behind shelves that they left which we took down to paint. Turns out they should have left the colours because we were painting the colours they originally had.

Also, contrary to all the decorating shows I think alot of people look at the rooms not your furniture or paint colour and so forth. The only thing I would do is pack away family photos. We had 29 viewing in two week on our home. I packed away our photos for viewing number 30 and the house sold for full asking price. Could have been a fluke but I am convinced it was the photos.

What color did she recommend you paint the trim?

Weird! I don't like non-white/off-white trim at ALL. That would be a turn off to me because painting all the trim would be a LOT of work (and I would want to paint it white). Besides, your trim should match your outlet covers, light switch plates, etc. and I certainly wouldn't want to have to replace all of those, which then would lead to replacing the outlets themselves, the light switches....it would be endless. I'm sure your light blue wouldn't be a turn off, either. I can't say paint colors were that much of an issue with us, and we looked at a LOT of houses. Only when they were out there and looked like they would be hard to cover up did we care.

I think I will go with the white trim, because I like it.

The walls I am still thinking about.

Tan trim? Ewww... Definitely go with white white trim.

And do a neutral tan on the walls. You don't necessarily need to paint every room. But do paint any that are really in need of a paint job or any with bold/personalized colors.

Tan trim? Yuck.

DH is currently in the process of repainting our entire house. It's only 6 1/2 years old, but the builder used flat paint, which is pretty much impossible to clean. I do, however, like the colors that were used...it's all very neutral and easy to decorate around. (Which is also what most new home buyers look for.)

With the exception of the future nursery, we're doing the entire house in a cream color that is very similar to the color the builder used. (We're using Behr Raffia Cream in a eggshell finish.) The trim and doors will be done in white paint with a satin finish.
