House Hunters Reno vs Fixer Upper

We drove thru Waco a few months ago- they had 2 Big billboards ( one for Waco tourism )- one foe a new B & B they own

Have you seen "Flipping Vegas"? I've only seen once episode and that was enough. The way those that couple speak to each other (a lot is "bleeped" out)......YUK. They are not a class act.
When my dd is home we will watch it with the sound off and make up our own dialogue! It's always the same, you are cheap Scott, Amy stop spending my money. Then a sexy agent will come in with multiple first day offers. Yes we are lame and need to find a new hobby. Lol

They also have a real estate agency. They are building quite a little empire. Other than the publicity they get from the show which is considerable I would bet the majority of their income doesn't come from the show. I'm surprised they haven't broken ground on their own housing development.

Believe it or not, the company I work for acts as consultants for folks doing land development in central Texas. Housing developments are part of that. Except for developments with half acre and larger lots, these things are shoestring operations at best. That's just making lots and getting the infrastructure installed so folks can buy the lots and hire their own builder. I don't know if anybody has the money to actually pre-build houses and sell them. The other ventures these two are in are higher profit margin, less dependent on investors for money, and MUCH less hassle.

....my DH is in 'the biz', and he thinks it's ALL a crock....

I love all of these shows. They are definitely scripted at times like how many times can Tarek and Christina say "WHAT?!" when they find an issue on Flip or Flop. Or that time that Christina's SUV was "stolen" but recovered with no damage shortly after? And does every stinking Waco house have shiplap?! It seems like the things that appear small to fix are large budget killers and the things that seem awful (like structural problems) are just a heavy duty screw into the adjoining wall and "POOF! all fixed"?! Right ....

But I still like to see the before and afters. I wonder if the furniture/decor in the Fixer Upper houses are purchased by the to-be occupants but are sold by Joanna's store. They have quite the diversified business model from what I hear.

I don't know if it was a repeat or not, but did anyone see last night's episode of the Property Brothers? They were helping a pair of brothers buy and renovate their bachelor/party pad. I think they had a budget of over $600,000 and they wanted to tear out a gorgeous stained glass window but it was protected by local historical society (thank god)!! Those idiots do not deserve that house! To top it off, the PropBros designed the stained glass window room with a pool table RIGHT NEXT TO THE WINDOW. The owners tried to break the pool table balls and couldn't hit the cue ball right and it went bouncing all over. All laughed and then the owners did a dumb boy wrestling move into a nearby sofa. Those idiots are going to break that stained glass window with their antics!! I need a hashtag #savethestainedglass. :headache::headache:

They definitely have a ton of extra ventures going on outside the show, so I wonder if they even do anymore renos outside the ones we see on the show. They have the new silo store, a bakery, a bed & breakfast, their realty company, Joanna's home furnishing line, a book coming out in the Fall. They sell some of the items from the silos online too and it's very expensive. Looks like you could buy it at a flea market for $3 and they mark it up to $50.
Reminds me of the Housewives show on Bravo, the women come out with their own line of jewelry, or a book and they try promoting it on the show. I guess when your 15 minutes is going strong, you try to strike it hot as much as you can.

I think I am a very shallow person. Whenever I've seen that show I cannot shake my fascination with the shoes Amy wears. I'm convinced she's in pain every minute she's in them and just don't get the point when she clearly is struggling to walk in them. Yep, I think that confirms I am shallow.

Anybody remember Flip this House with what I am convinced is one of the sleaziest humans to walk the planet, Armando Montelongo? (Where's the skeevy smilie when you need one?) He screwed over his brother and sister in law while the show was still on the air and has had a string of legal issues for years. I always felt sorry for the people who bought his homes. He basically would wallpaper over major structural and mechanical issues on those homes, most of which were a stretch for people of very modest means to become homeowners.

Saw his wife, now ex-wife, on Say Yes to the Dress a few months back. She's marrying a younger guy and was in search of a "super sexy" dress. I'd imagine exotic dancers in the shadiest of strip clubs would blush to be seen in what she was looking for. Basically what it seemed to boil down to is she really was looking for a skirt to say yes to.

I LOVE all HGTV shows and am particularly attached to Fixer Upper. I just love Chip! And while I realize that the shows have to be somewhat scripted, I have become more of a believer in all the problems they have. We started building a house last May and sometimes we have the exact conversations that they have on those shows. It's funny....sometimes. But we have went over our timeline and budget (still not moved in....hopefully in April!). Granted, my husband isn't a contractor, but he does design and sell roof and floor trusses and he says this isn't uncommon at all. We could have made a great HGTV show for the last year!

I love them because then SEEM genuine
the other hosts on other shows just seem to be reading a script

I forgot about this guy until now. I just googled his name and now I remember that sleezy guy. There's an interesting Forbes article about him and his get rich quick seminars. Awful human, for sure.

there is a new one , GOOD BONES~ a mother /daughter team. They are really fun so far. They are on a mission to revitalize their town in Indianapolis one place at a time. Kinda how Fixer Upper helped Waco values
I would love to see this one. I wish they would be willing to move a little north and do our town, we really need it!

House Hunters Renovation: ALWAYS over budget and took longer than expected.

Fixer Upper: NEVER mentions going over budget or taking longer than expected.

What do you think?

I like the show First Time Flippers. Actual real people, doing a real flip with their own money. It's fun to see how uninformed, inexperienced & clueless some of these people are. Their screw ups are funny. Watched a guy fall off a roof when he went on it to "take a look around" for a leak. Another guy tied himself with rock climbing rope & harness to what looked like a bathroom exhaust pipe, with his wife holding other end of rope down on the ground while she was near nervous breakdown over it. They write snarky remarks/comments onscreen about what the people are doing wrong. It's really funny. I like it because it shows people with no experience & how they can actually accomplish a flip/renovation.

I can't stand either of those shows, but for some reason I am ok with Flip or Flop. Maybe because it is only 30 minutes.

Have you noticed whenever the husband is stressed, especially about the budget, he always rubs his eyebrows with his thumb & middle finger like he's trying to get rid of a massive migraine...lol I think it soothes him & prevents him from flipping his lid over money

Watching a *marathon of it tonight. When are they going to update their intro. Finishing their 4th season and they are still mentioning the housing crisis. I think it is over. I think they have more than recovered.

*why oh why does HGTV do marathons.

One day is Property brothers. Thursday is Flip or Flop. Another is Fixer Upper. Can't they spread it out?

Armando was even on Undercover boss. With his bodyguards and arm candy.

Anybody remember Trading Spaces with Paige as the hostess. I loved those shows but I did read after they did a show here that most of their redecorating projects were done kind of shoddy. More like TV set window dressing than quality construction.

Networks have jumped on the "binge watching" bandwagon. When you flip around the channels, it's the same show in 2/4/6 hour blocks.

I thought Ty and Carter were better than that. Wow.

(I figured the decor might be haphazard--but not the builds with the exception that they used a ton of MDF.)
