House Hunters Reno vs Fixer Upper

Don't any of these buyers get a home inspection before purchasing? DW and I try to guess what the problem will be, asbestos, electrical, plumbing, etc.

I read an article where they interviewed Israel from Flip or Flop. He mentioned that Tarek and Christina know about all the problems in the homes before they buy and that the scenes where they show them finding a water leak, un-permitted addition, etc... are scripted. The issues and problems are real but typically not surprises like they are made out to be.

there is a new one , GOOD BONES~ a mother /daughter team. They are really fun so far. They are on a mission to revitalize their town in Indianapolis one place at a time. Kinda how Fixer Upper helped Waco values
I think HGTV must think this is a winning format. They are also showing a young husband wife team doing the Fixer Upper theme in Laurel, Mississippi. The couple is a little too sweet in that one. It made me appreciate Chip and Joanna.

I read that someone wanted to hire Chip and Joanna from a distance and they refuse. They only want t do business in Waco TX. I like their show, but how many times do we get to watch Chip Demo, bring the kids by Joanna with cupcakes on her staging night. Sometimes it seems the people pick the worst house possible, since they know Chip and Joanna will do something wonderful with it.

That is interesting. I really like Joanna's decorating style so I am not surprised that someone wanted to hire her for a location outside of the Waco area.

I love Chip and Joanna, but her decorating is a little too shabby chic for me.

I would love Christina to design a house for us. I love her kitchens and bathrooms.

I always wonder why, on Flip or Flop, when Tarek asks Israel for an estimate on what something will cost, no matter what price Israel says Tarek just says OK. How can that be? Do you think they have some sort of agreement worked out that Israel gets a set amount no matter what? I just can't figure out how he (Israel) can just name any price and Tarek always says yes to it.

lol I thought the same thing - every show goes the same way. Demo day, finds an issue, calls the homeowner, Joanna visits Clint for a custom wood piece, Chip brings the kids by to visit Joanna, she loves it, etc etc. I can predict it every time.

I know that Joanna has a new line of home furnishings in stores in other parts of the country now. I remember seeing her in the NC or SC area promoting it, I think at a home show. I bet they get inquiries all the time to do homes across the country, but really, how long can they stick to only Waco? I would imagine their services are expensive now due to their demand. And how often are people in a position where they have a large amount of cash to buy a home and do a complete reno with it, especially in an area like Waco?

They each have their little thing. There has to be a something that makes them interesting....

Having a major disaster/problem that wasn't planned for, keeping the designer from doing all that was promised, is the one for Love it or List it. Every single time.

You describe it exactly right! Israel has a good gig with that show. ::yes::

I think that's why she's pushing her Magnolia Farms brand; they also have a new Bed and Breakfast to supplement their income. They probably won't have to leave Waco. I can understand why, too- house renovations take a long time. Since Chip and Jo are very hands-on they'd want to stay around for most of it. Being out of state would mean a lot of time away from their young kids.

They also have a real estate agency. They are building quite a little empire. Other than the publicity they get from the show which is considerable I would bet the majority of their income doesn't come from the show. I'm surprised they haven't broken ground on their own housing development.

I love Chip and Joanna! If I ever bought a fixer upper in my home town, I would want them to come fix it up but alas we don't live in Waco, Texas :-( I think even though it's predictable, I just love her style and Chips antics. I feel good after I watch them :-)

House Hunters makes me mad. I always wonder how these young couples (first time home buyers) have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on a home and how it always has to have an updated kitchen, en suite, 4 car garage etc... Is there no such thing as working your way up anymore? Each house gets better because you are doing better financially???

Can't stand Flip or Flop. I don't know the show well but the investor they get their money from is always mentioned and how they have to make their money back to pay him. It is annoying to me.

I would love a follow up to Tiny House Hunters too! That cracks me up. They get all upset that their bathroom sink is their kitchen sink!!! Too funny!!

They definitely have a ton of extra ventures going on outside the show, so I wonder if they even do anymore renos outside the ones we see on the show. They have the new silo store, a bakery, a bed & breakfast, their realty company, Joanna's home furnishing line, a book coming out in the Fall. They sell some of the items from the silos online too and it's very expensive. Looks like you could buy it at a flea market for $3 and they mark it up to $50.

It sounds like they don't need the money or have the time to do renos. They probably just do them for the show.

If you watch the show just like theirs from Laurel, MS you realize how important. the personalities of Chip and Joanna are to the success of their show. They have that thing that makes you like them. The other show not so much.

I figured this was the case.

We are redoing our kitchen, DH and I conversations sound like them.

Me: I want this high end- countertop/backsplash/tile/etc

DH: No it's too expensive.

Lol

(In the end we go with mine because it looks better ;) )

Have you seen "Flipping Vegas"? I've only seen once episode and that was enough. The way those that couple speak to each other (a lot is "bleeped" out)......YUK. They are not a class act.

I thought they already did~ I must be thinking of the bed and breakfast
