House Fire insurance question

I am so sorry. We had a fire and DH hired a public adjuster-I say stay away! I did all the work (inventory, etc.) and he collected a huge part of the check.

Adjusters or CONTRACTORS???? We don't have adjusters that just show up around here but there are some contractors that are just as as bad as ambulance chasing attorneys.

This is exactly the truth. DH is a contractor with a major insurance company, and the contractors are definitely the ambulance chasers. Just be careful. You will be working a LOT with the insurance company, adjuster and contractor in the future. Sorry for your loss.

OP, I am so sorry this happened to you.

Our house burned down in the middle of the night when I was 12, and all we had in the world were the pajamas we were wearing when it happened!

Luckily our church and my school helped out with donations, as far as basic needs like toiletries and food. I was too young at the time to remember all the details with insurance.

It's terrible, and again, I'm sorry.

Thank you so much everyone. Our insurance adjustor did come out this morning and was very helpful. He did advance us money. Tomorrow the personal belongings adjustor will be out to inventory my house. They have a realtor looking for a rental so that made me feel better. Right now we are staying at my mom's but she has stage 4 lung cancer and I feel horrible imposing on her even though it's an emergency. The public adjustors are crazy the way they show up but we are just dealing with our insurance company. We have a very comprehensive policy so I am thankful for that. Your loss of use coverage will cover you to stay at a hotel until they can find you a rental home. Check into an extended stay place as you will have more room and some meals provided. It sounds like staying at Mom's place isn't the greatest situation. Call your adjuster in the morning and let him know that you need to move to a hotel.
