Any suggestions for a good hotel on I95, (mid to south) Virginia or (northern)NC ? Also, what do you suggest if we're driving from Jersey, leaving at about 6pm, a goodmidpoint to crash for a good sleep ?
dont want to have tons of driving in the morning, but we also dont like to drive when we're way too tired... Im thinking a midnight stop ?

Hampton Inns & Suites, about $100 for the room and breakfast. We have 3 kids and have done the drive 2 times in the last 18 months from just outside of Philadelphia to our house in Kissimmee (3 miles past Disney). Depending on when we leave we have stayed in Fayetteville NC and Miyrtle Beach SC. If you have a GPS (or can borrow one) it may have a feature that tells you what is with in about 25 miles of your current position and gives you the number to call. We have used this feature for other trips as well. Driving is an interesting adventure, and we had a blast, it just takes lots of time. DVD player is a must! Have a great trip!

I used to drive from NY(fly now),but I used to like to stay at Country Inns & Suites.

The first time we drove we stopped in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and stayed in a Quality Inn, it was filthy; we slept with towels over the sheets. Now we leave early in the morning drive straight through to Disney, it take approximately 17 hours, but it's nice to know when we wake up in the AM we don't have to get back in the car!

you wont make it to rocky mount by midnight! you will probably be south of richmond but just north of the va/nc border. this leaves you a really long 2nd day (somewhere around 12 hours)

We have only done this once in Feb. but will be doing it again in 1 day.

My husband wants to drive straight thru but I am coming home with out him so we will be staying in the Holiday Inn Express in Petersburg Virginia on the way home. Cost $114 for a suite. It has queen beds so worth it. Also a breakfast in the morning is included. Here is the direst # if you are interested. 1-804-518-1800.

On the way down we stayed in north carolins in the same hotel a bit less expensive it was in Roanoke Rapids I believe.

IslaBonita - How do you like driving from RI? Thinking of doing it from Central Mass in Feb. for school break. When you went in Feb. did you have any problems? What time did you leave?

Any info is really appreciated!

Have an awesome trip!!

Thanks we will.

I thought it would be he!!ish but it wasn't to bad. I do prefer to fly but the cost was an issue for us. We have a home in Florida and the rental market due to the economy. I can not complain really but it saved us a boat load. Gas was cheap, cheap, flights were very high because it was our childrens school vaca, car rentals have been very hight this past year and a half.

I would do it again in the summer but on the way home in Feb. we hit sleet in Conn. and it was so close to home I could not stop 2 hours from home so we kept going but visibility was NG, it was very slow moving. For the most part I did great timing and had that only problem but started to think when I got home that we could have hit bad weather and that would not be good.

It took us 2 days. started out at 10:00 my DS had an exam he could not miss. Got to NC at about 10:00. We hit traffic on the J turnpike a truck had dropped a load of 2x4's across the whole road. We would have been there a lot sooner oh well.

My kids had xbox, 2 DVD players, art stuff, reading books, IPods. It all was good really. I thought at first I would have at least one less child but no we all came home with out any problems and I have a teenager! LOL

We leave in less then 24 hours and this time the DH is joining us.

If I can give you any additional info PM me.

We drive from CT every year. We usually stop in Fayettville or Rocky Mount
We usually stay at a Hampton Inn - Residents Inn or Courtyard by Marriott (Courtyard is my favorite-love the beds!!)
Have a safe trip

We will probably be driving again in October. It us about 16.5 hours each way. We left around 7:30 pm and got in for lunch. On the way home, we left at 5 am and got home around 9:30.

I thought the ride was going to be terrible, but I am willing to do it if there are no deals from Spirit. Just bring enough stuff to keep the kids occupied.

Come on over to the transportation board, all you drivers. There's a link in my signature to the definitive discussion on all things we drivers need or want. If you have a question, someone there is right back with the answer.

We love driving. We're leaving for our second trip this year on Saturday!
