hi everyone

am thinking of planning a surprise trip in november for dds birthday but would be going by eurostar for the first time would have to travel down from glasgow the night before and stay in a hotel in london...can someone advise me of any good cheap hotels nearby please?

We stay at the Novotel St Pancras its only a 2minute walk to the eurostar. For some reason the TA has to book just the adults then request a extra bed for the children in special requests otherwise it says max occupancy. Its very very nice hotel and we paid £135 inc breakfast buffet.

Don't know if you have considered this but we are also going by eurostar and are from Glasgow so rather than pay for a hotel in London we are getting the Caledonian Sleeper train the night before and will wake up in London ready to go get the eurostar. If you have kids you can get a family railcard for £28 then you save a third on adult ticket on the sleeper train and 60% off the kids.

So much cheaper than getting a train then paying for accomodation plus if you do have kids the longest part of the journey is while they're in bed.

lycam if you dont mind me asking roughly how much does the sleeper cost its only myself and dd travelling (she is 5).....also is it comfortable?is it like a normal train or does it have little berths with beds?

Just be warned the reliability of the sleeper isn't great - because a lot of engineering work goes on at night, it sometimes takes a tortuous route to London. One of my colleagues travelled down once , set his alarm expecting to wake up in London, and when it went off he was only halfway there!

By the way, I stay in the Premier Inn Kings Cross - 2 mins walk to the station (right next door to kings Cross), and very comfortable. Trouble is, prices have gone up a bit recently, but I find it is still cheaper than the Novotel.

I got a quote off premier inn for 2 adults and 1 child last year and it was £178 and same quote this year! That's more than the novotel. Holiday inn kings cross was more too

Well Travelodge have a £10, £15 and £19 sale starting at 6am in the morning over 450 hotels are taking part but they havent said which one, I am hoping for something near by! I am getting up at 5:50am just for it! at the moment all the hotels near there are £90+ but hoping for this sale to be good!

I've always found the sleeper to be reliable, always arrives half hour either way of when its due in, usually early. Apparently the night times are very generous to allow for any maintenance that may be going on. Its quite comfortable though compact but there's a lounge where you can sit if you don't want to sleep right away, never used it myself as the kids are always tired by that time.

There's a lot of info on seat 61 if you search for it as I can't post links.

Prices vary a lot but can be got for anything from £19 single if you get a bargain berth. If you're booking with children though you need to call to book your ticket.

All booking info is on Scotrails website as well but you have to phone to book if you're travelling with kids.
