Hotels in Pittsburgh - help!

So DH and I want to take a road trip to Pennsylvania. I am a complete dork so I want to stop at a place that I saw on Unwrapped and eat at a restaurant I saw on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. (I'm clearly a fan of food network ). Yesterday I spent several hours researching things to do in Pittsburgh and then when I was trying to look for hotels I was getting confused. It's hard to tell where hotels are in relation to things... I know that we want to go to the zoo and aquarium so I'm hoping that the place we stay isn't too far from that.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to stay? And hopefully it won't be too expensive! Thanks everyone for your help!

I was just there!! Unfortunately, we stayed at my friend's home. We ate at a great place called The Double Wide. Great BBQ!!!

Also, if you have time, go down to the strip district. And take your appetite with you!

Don't stay at a Motel 6 somewhere near the airport. We did have a nice stay at a Candlewood Suites near the airport several years ago.

I LOVE visiting Pittsburgh. We go at least once a year for baseball games. When we go we stay at the Springhill Suites Northshore because it is right across the street from the ballpark. Great place but not near the zoo.

There is a Hampton Inn near the strip district (not what you are thinking!!!!) it is an area of warehouses, stores, food etc. The Hampton is fairly new and has free parking I believe. The strip district is fun. You should definately go there one morning. Saturdays it is packed. Cheap stuff and yummy food. In the area is Primanti's which was featured on Man vs Food, they make huge sandwiches with the coleslaw and fries in the sandwich. It is on a back corner, you go in and sit down, either in the dining room or the bar -same thing really! read the menu off the blackboard (corned beef is fantastic). This is the original one and the best!

Whooleys which has the best fresh seafood and a hot food counter. Try the fish sandwich and the lobster bisque. They have sushi too (yuk not for me!) Onion rings are really good too. The only thing I have had there that was just ok is the fried clams -they are just the usual frozen kind.

Check out Mike Feinbergs for all sorts of fun stuff. And the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company is great too. We enjoy looking around and my dad always gets some cheese to take home. I like the olive bar, especially the antipasto. Needless to say we bring a cooler.

Getting around Pittsburgh can be tricky -lots of bridges, and streets that start out going one way but end up going an entirely different way. But any hotel should have directions to where you want to go.

Point State Park is interesting too as is Station Square (upscale shops and restaurants).

The zoo is wonderful but plan on doing a lot of walking.

As for other hotels, I usually look for a Marriott, I trust all their brands.

If you want to stay right in downtown Pittsburgh why not check out the Sheraton. Pittsburgh is a great place with a lot to do and see, have fun!!!!

This is the reason we went to Pittsburgh!!! I saw Primanti Bros's on the Travel Channel!!!!! It was delicious!

Also, the popcorn from the Pittsburgh Popcorn Co. was out of this world. Loved the chocolate and peanut butter!!!!

We are going to take a road trip to Pittsburgh too and we are trying to figure out where to stay. We are going to do the Pittsburgh zoo during the day and a Pirate's game that night. We leave on Mon. We aren't sure which hotel to stay at either!

There is a hotel right across the street from PNC park, you may want to look at that. That way you don't have to worry about driving after the game. I'm not sure which brands, I'll see what I can find out.

Springhill Suites Northshore by Marriott is directly across the street and a great hotel.

Otherwise, park in the parking garage on the other side of the river and walk across the bridge to the game (they close the bridge to vehicles) fun experience too!

Priceline for Pittsburgh usually gives good hotels at good prices!

There is a nice holiday inn express on the southside. The hotels downtown are nice but $$ and most of the stuff downtown closes at night so there is not much to do.
Of course if the entire reason is for going to Pirmanti's in the strip I would do the Hampton inn by there. The zoo is not far and there are other great places to eat around.

We moved to Pittsburgh a few years ago and love it here! We've had several families come to visit and three have stayed at the Sheraton at Station Square. There are several restaurants there and they enjoyed taking the ferry over to the ballgame.

I don't know if anyone can use them, but we have decided not to go to Pittsburgh til later in the year and I have 4 tickets to a Pirates game for Monday, August 17th. It's a 7:05 start. If anyone wants them let me know so I can get them out in the mail ASAP!
