We are planning on going to Birmingham in September to see Les Miserables at the BJCC.

Being that we are from out of town/out of state, we will need a hotel for the night. We know the Sheraton is attached to the BJCC, but would like to see if anyone has reviews/input on it or suggestions for other close by hotels. Also, what are some suggestions for restaurants/food near by? We'd like to be able to park our car once and not move it until we head back home, if possible.

I live less than an hour away from the BJCC, and if you want a nearby hotel, the Sheraton is pretty much it. And as far as nearby restaurants go, there might be something inside the Sheraton (not sure since I don't have to stay in a hotel in B'ham), but that would pretty much be it. If you're driving, you'll probably need to drive around for food. Honestly, I'm not hugely familiar with the area, other than driving straight to the BJCC & home (usually I'll either eat at home or one of the areas between home & Birmingham). I don't like how everything is set up around the BJCC, but the city is working on plans to try to develop some kind of "entertainment district" in and around the BJCC to bring in more hotels/restaurants/entertainment.

Which area would you be coming from? I might be able to recommend an area to stop to eat on your way there.

(This is keypooh's mom.) We are coming from the Atlanta area, so I-20. We are open to driving, if necessary. We aren't sure which day we will be going (it depends on which day has the best seats), so time may be an issue. If you can make any suggestions, we would really appreciate it. We had hoped the area would be like the areas in Atlanta where we could park at the hotel and just walk to get something to eat and back to the BJCC. Since that doesn't sound like it's a good plan, we are open to other ideas. Thanks!

Let's see, I'm still not all that familiar with hotels, but for restaurants on your way, I'll recommend Anniston (in Calhoun County) or Pell City (in St. Clair County). Both areas have at least a reasonable variety of options (if you stop in Pell City, I recommend getting off the exit for US Hwy 231, more options). Many are family-friendly. However, they're still at least 45 minutes to an hour away from the BJCC.

You could also try the Leeds/Moody area. It's still a good half hour away from Birmingham, but there are several options there. It's been a while since I've been out in that area, but there's a new outlet mall called the Shops at Grand River, so if you wouldn't mind the drive, that area might be an option for eating and hotel. It's right off I-20. I'm not sure of the exit, but it's the same area as the Bass Pro Shops.

I hope this helps at least a little. Sorry I'm not more familiar with the area, as far as exact distances and exit numbers! If I can help more, please let me know!

Those sound great! Thanks for the suggestions!

let's see...there is a jim and nick's bbq downtown, just a few minutes from the BJCC (1908 11th avenue south, birmingham, al 35205; 205-320-1060). the food is wonderful-my mom and i met my brother there once for lunch a couple of years ago when he was working in birmingham. you'll find lots of restaurants at exits along the way; trussville has a LOT of options. as far as hotels go, the closest is the sheraton there at the BJCC. if you decide to stay there, you might ask the front desk about food within walking distance. the city is building an entertainment district around the BJCC with restaurants, shops and clubs, and i haven't been there in a while, so i'm not sure what's open at this point, but the locals should know.

Thank you!

I appreciate the suggestions!

We're just over an hour away, but were in that area just last week. If you're just there for one night, then staying downtown would probably be best. I don't remember seeing much there other than offices.

Their downtown area is not like Nashville's or Atlanta's.
If there for more than one night, then consider the area near the Galleria.
