This may be a silly question, but if you ask the hotel to upgrade your room when you check in is it usually a free upgrade or do you pay the difference?

I really doubt if you can ask for upgrade. Except you are a gold member of that hotel.

I think only if they are out of available room, otherwise, they won't give you an upgrade. This is the case that I got an upgrade during my stay in Wyndham Palace.

You can ask. If they have rooms sometimes they will give you a free upgrade. Sometimes they will come back with a price. Just depends. The worst that can happen is they say no.

I've read on these boards that they sometimes will give you a good deal on an upgrade depending upon the crowds and what's available when you ask at check in. It never hurts to ask!

I usually ask for an upgrade...I never ask "may I have a free upgrade?" I've been quoted a price and it has happen for free...the worse they can do is tell you nothing if available..it can't hurt to ask!!

One way to get an upgrade in a hotel where you have no "pull", eg: no frequent guest status, is to ask for a corner room. Corner rooms are almost always bigger and nicer, many times with windows on 2 sides, so even if it's not an upgrade per se, it'll likely be better than a standard room. Also, don't try to check in at 10 am - not enough rooms ready - or 6 pm - too many people arriving. The best time to get to a hotel is about 3 or 4 pm, as all the rooms are cleaned by then but they have not yet done all the pre-assignments.
