Hotel Upgrades??

Has anyone had any luck getting a room upgrade over the phone before their trip? Or do you just get lucky or not lucky upon arrival?

Can you pay for an upgrade if you used a service like hotel kingdom and didn't book right through the hotel?

I got lucky and was upgraded to club level on arrival for two of my five nights. They were booked for the other nights. I had the entertainment rate.
