hotel tipping

This tends to turn into a heated discussion on these boards because everyone has such different opinions!

I personally only tip about $3 a day. When I stay somewhere for an extended period of time (7 nights would qualify as an extended amount of time for me), I might skip housekeeping for a day or two and then tip $5 on the days that I use it. It's usually just my husband and I traveling, so we don't go through towels as often. You can always call down and ask for more towels too if you don't feel the rest of your room needs cleaning. I usually tip a little more on the last day since they (SHOULD!) be changing out the bedding and everything - it's more work. I recently stayed in Vegas for three nights but didn't have housekeeping come at all, so I just left a $10 tip for the last day.

Is this like cow tipping? Because I don't recommend tipping hotels. It is not a good idea to do so, especially if the floors are already crooked to begin with, because the foundation is sliding into the already crumbling ground beneath it. Believe me, the last time I read about people tipping hotels, it was so not a pretty picture.

We brought Aero chocolate bars from Canada on our last trip, and left them in a ziplock bag with the tip money, labeled, "For housekeeping." AFAIK, Aero chocolate bars are sort of unique to the USA, and housekeeping did accept our 'tips.' I found though, if we left money out with a note saying 'For Housekeeping' it wasn't the same as sealing it up in a bag, to make it known what exactly we were tipping.

Our fancy Mousekeeping envelopes, though looked cute, were never opened, either.

When I travel for work I leave about $3-5 per day, however when I am with my DD5 and DD2 I leave $10 per day when at a regular hotel. However, when at my timeshare which has housekeeping every couple of days, I'll usually tip $20 on those days. But again, part of that is because regardless of what I do they completely destroy the room.

But it really is up to you, and I would say probably half of the people don't even leave a tip at all.

Before each of our trips, I have made up an envelope for each day with a $5 bill inside, sealed, and "HOUSEKEEPING" written on the outside. I leave it in a conspicuous place before we leave the room each morning. It is always picked up, and I love coming back to a clean and tidy room each day, so I always have the housekeeping come!
