We're going on the Disney Cruise in October and I'd like to spend the night prior to the cruise at a Disney area hotel (most people stay at Port Canaveral).

I've read some mixed reviews about this hotel, but I understand it's being completely remodeled after hurricane damage.

I'd love to hear some reviews about this hotel. thanks!!!!!!!

We are staying at the Hotel Royal Plaza in July. They are in the process of remodeling because of the hurricanes. The hotel is closed right now and will re-open July 1st. I will certainly let you know what it's like after our trip in July!! :cheer2: :cool1:

I think it is still closed, but when I drove by a few months ago it looked like they were COMPLETLY gutting and remodeling
My stay there was very nice. I think the Tower rooms were much nicer then the wing rooms.

We stayed there on our last trip. We were in a tower suite room on the 12th floor with balcony facing DTD and I could see PI & Epcot fireworks. The room was great with a hot tub. Living room was seperate from bedroom. We had a nice stay.

We just drove by last week and it still looks pretty gutted. They were working on it though..same with the Holiday Inn although I hadnt realized they were redoing that place too

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Royal Plaza in July '03 (before renovations) for our honeymoon. It was actually a last minute decision after I happened to pick up a discount book in some Waffle House type of restaurant near Universal which had a coupon advertising rooms at HRP for something like $59/night! :Pinkbounc (I wish I could remember the name of the book -- if anyone knows, could you post it?)

As if that wasn't a good enough deal, when we arrived I asked if they could give us any kind of free upgrade and they gave it to us!!! I think it might have had something to do with the white ears-and-veil headband I was wearing.

We stayed in either a Deluxe Tower Room or a Premiere Tower room (sorry, I don't know which it was) for several nights, and we were downgraded to a regular room when we added an extra day at the last minute (the afternoon of the extra day).

I thought the lobby with the glass elevator was beautiful.

Our Deluxe (or Premiere) Tower Room was gorgeous. We had a King Bed, very pretty and spacious sitting room with chairs and a sleeper sofa, and a big, beautiful bathroom with a big whirlpool tub and separate glass stand-up shower. This room put the CBR rooms to shame (I'd stayed there the year before -- although I loved CBR's grounds and pool). The room was kept very clean every day, including a fresh supply of some really nice Bath & Body Works supplies and a new (adorable) rubber duckie every day. We had a view of Epcot from our tiny balcony. I just loved this room.

Our "regular" room was a standard tower room. After our beautiful deluxe room, I was very disappointed. It was not as nice as CBR, although still cleaner than CBR. The room was okay, slightly toned down, but the bathroom was just ugly. It was hard to believe we were in the same building. Well, at least they still let us stay for the low $59.

The pool was plain, but clean, large, and relatively quiet, which we appreciated. We never had a chance to see the pool bar open. I don't know if that was because we came out too late in the evening, or because it was July.

My husband loved that there was a pool table in the tavern. I thought the on-site restaurant was average, although the daily buffet was quite nice.

The staff was very nice to us during check-in and the line was short, but we had to wait a short time for a manager to come down to approve our use of the great coupon -- he had to see it to believe it. The line was fairly long during check-out, but we were treated nicely. When we came back later that day, the staff seemed exasperated with our last minute room request. (They could have just said no, rather than click tongues and make us feel like we were putting them out.) Either we just got lucky with the first desk clerk, or we were just plain unlucky with the last one. Not quite Disney staff.

There was a Disney store off the hotel lobby. We bought our Disney passes there, and a real Disney staffer welcomed us by taking our picture for us and giving us a free Magic Moment certificate (which now hangs on our wall!)

Staying at a Downtown Disney hotel, we were able to use the free, regular bus transportation to the parks. I think it's a different system from the Disney resort busses, and we did notice. The Downtown Disney hotel busses were mostly reliable and less crowded, though they didn't come as frequently as the official Disney busses do. The drivers are not Disney either. We once had an especially long wait getting back to the hotel from Downtown Disney when the stores closed, but overall it was still better than off-site hotels I think.

We're thinking of going back to HRP again when we go back to WDW this fall, this time with our three kids (two of his and one of mine -- blended family) because, with five people, the price (even full price) can't be beaten. Their rooms with double beds and sitting room sleep 6! We'll definitely get one of the nicer rooms again.

(I hope this wasn't way too long -- it's my first post!)

I stayed there in my family in July - august of 2003. we arnt a fam who spends much time at the hotel, so it was good enough for whta it iwas. a beautiful short walk to DTD. The pool was really nice, and the people who worked there were great. They do have a small but nice disney souvenier store in the main lobby and then another ahop towards the pool area, less disney more other interesting souvies.

The rooms were surprisingly bigger than we thought theyd be. and one thing we all loved was the beds. they were SO COMFORTABLE.

I found the bus rides to be loooong, as they picked up and dropped off guests from every resort on the DTD resort strip. But only one night was it really crowded, every other time we went we got seats and there was hardly anyone standing, if at all.

HappygirlMagill: Your post was very informative!! I've never stayed at the Hotel Royal Plaza but will this July. After reading all the negative reviews on TripAdvisor, I was having second thoughts....but I think I will enjoy staying there now that I've read your post. One quick question I have for you is, do you know if the Disney stores deliver packages that I buy from them to the Hotel Royal Plaza like they do at on-site Disney hotels?

Thanks, everyone! We booked a Premier Tower room for $120, so I believe we got a great deal (thanks to Mousesavers.com).

Looking forward to a fun stay at HRP!

Disney does not deliver packages to the DTD resorts. Also unless you are staying at the Hilton you do not get any of the Extra Magic Hours.

When we stayed at HRP (7/03) we were able to take part in the extra hours at MK. It wasn't free -- we had to buy tix -- but we definitely qualified to participate. I'm not sure about the early hours; I'm always so pooped from the day before, I wind up sleeping too late!

Kim&Chris and disneyfamilyof5, I hope you all have a wonderful time! I haven't read them, but I suspect the negative reviews of HRP might be because of those yucky standard rooms (I really was disappointed). As long as you reserve one of the better ones, I think you'll be quite pleased. And besides, with all of the renovations they've been doing, maybe all of the rooms are as nice now as our better one was.

You could participate in the thing they use to have where you paid, but you can't particpate in the current program. The current evening hours are free and while it may be that HRP pays Disney to allow their guests to attend so far only Hilton has made that deal.

I found out that what we participated in in 2003 was not the Extra Magic Hours but the E-Ride Night. I was confused! You're right, CarolA, Hilton's are the only DTD guests who may participate in the Extra Magic Hours. But all of the DTD guests may buy tix for the E-Ride Nights, when available.

According to their website, they're not opening until September. Anyone with reservations before that will be relocated to their sister property, The Lake Buena Vista Resort:

Thank you for visiting The Hotel Royal Plaza in the Walt Disney World Resort web site!

Hurricane Charley, Francis and Jeanne caused nonstructural damage to our beautiful resort. As a result, Management of the hotel made the tough decision to temporarily close the Hotel Royal Plaza as we make repairs and complete a magical multi-million dollar renovation. Our team is working with excitement and anticipation of our grand re-opening in September 2005.

Disney's newest renovated hotel will feature plush carpeting, exquisite draperies and will debut our new Royal Beds. Additional guest room amenities will include high speed internet access, a hair dryer, safe, refreshment center, 27" color stereo television, iron and ironing board, voice mail phone and step out balcony or patio, just to name a few. Renovations do not stop here ...

The Hotel Royal Plaza will re-open in September 2005. Plan your magical vacation now by clicking on "Make a Reservation Today" to confirm rates and availability. We will be updating our web site with the most current photos and news as our renovations progress.

For accommodations prior to September 2005, please click on the logo below for our sister property, The Lake Buena Vista Resort. It is located directly across the street and is also in the heart of Downtown Disney

Where did you get this information? I'm on their website...www.royalplaza.com but I can't find that information. I have to spend one night there before checking into the Poly. When were they planning on letting the people know that have reservations there? I just called their 800 # and the info you just gave was absolutely correct. If not for this great board, I would have probably not known until I arrived there!!! :scared1:
