Hi there, I've been following the post with rumours on work on the Wilderness Lodge pool this year. I don't suppose I'm alone in that one of the things I was looking forward to on my hols was chilling by the pool. What come back do you have if something like this happens? A discount or opportunity to move to another hotel? Or is it just tough and listed in your t&c that they can make any changes they fancy?

Thanks
Kit

edited: yup the booking line have just confirmed it will be shut when we are there in November

1) Yep, pretty much it.
2) Typically, you just have to grin-and-bear-it.
3) Or, you can ask if there is a room at a different resort.
4) But, still no comp's or discounts.
5) Rehabs are part of running a resort, whether in the parks or the hotels.

The pool near the Villas might be an option.

Or I'm sure they'll be more than accommodating if you choose to switch hotels.

not especially. We've been offered a Savannah room at AKL for £400 - is that any good? Too frazzled to decide. After planning for 12 years its kinda thrown me :-(

The main feature pool at Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort is scheduled to be closing for a refurbishment later this year.

The Silver Creek Springs pool is expected to close on September 3 through to November 27, reopening again on November 28 2014.

During that time, the quiet pool will remain open, and guests will be able to use the pools at both Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Disney's Contemporary Resort, with transportation provided to both.

I don't know about the price but I love Savannah view rooms at AKL.

However, it IS "far" from the parks. That doesn't bother me but it might be a deal breaker for you.

If you were looking forward to the location of Wilderness Lodge as related to MK, I would not recommend switching. We love AKL, but it is WAAYYYY far away from MK. It's way closer to AK, and most other things are fairly comparable (Epcot, DHS, DTD, water parks distance wise). Some people dislike that extra distance imensely. Others (like myself) don't mind. The styles of the two hotels are actually fairly similar - in fact the same designers designed them both which is very clear from the lobbies. Beyond that it's a matter of taste.

They are offering you transport to use other pools at the Contemporary (right nearby) and Fort Wilderness (VERY nearby by boat). It's an inconvenience, but I don't see it (hopefully) ruining your vacation.

On the other hand, if the pool is a high priority for your family, then I would suggest the switch to AKL. They have an awesome pool at Jambo House if that is where would be staying, I would say it is a better pool the Wilderness Lodge. (I haven't checked out the Kidani pool if you end up there - but Kidani also doesn't have all the services of the main resort, so I would try and avoid there.)

I have also just been informed by my TA that the pool will be shut. I'm not impressed. However the Magic Kingdom location is important to us and none of the alternatives she has suggested are any where near. I doubt we will end up swimming at all, we had thought we'd use the pools to cool down in the afternoon, but we aren't planning on a pool vacation so an extra (I'm guessing at least) 20 min each way to the pool will eat into our time too much. And the hassle factor with two small children makes it just not worth it. I'm disappointed that no one thinks there may be something to make up for it though :(

Well, here's the thing...are you canceling your vacation? No. Is anyone? Probably not. So what's Disney's incentive to give you a discount. They are giving you several months warning. There are constantly things at Disney that are closed, they can't start rebating people whenever something is closed. They are making accomidations to let you use a pool at a nearby resort. They are also giving you the option of changing resorts. You could cancel and stay off property. If enough people did this, they might start discounting. But people don't, so Disney won't.

I wasn't really expecting a discount for the reasons you stated. I had hoped they may provide something else to entertain the kids at the resort(on site not a bus/boat ride away), having never been I'm not sure what they could do but I'm sure they could come up with something. My only experience of Disney so far is on DCL and they really went out of their way to make sure they made up for any problems we incurred (and with bad weather there were a few).

They have given the option to change resort, but having announced this several weeks after the free dining release there aren't a whole lot of suitable options.

And 3 months notice isn't a lot given we had to make dining reservations 6 months out!

I was thinking the exact same thing, they ought to be able to give their customers at least as much notice as they expect to customers to give them! Maybe if they did a little better long-range planning they could begin notifying people of things like this when they made the reservations.

Thanks for all the replies. Having slept on it I'm almost sure we'll keep our reservation as it is. We have two small children so its kind of a big deal either way. No pool at the hotel is a big deal and being at AK with the longer ride to MK is also a big deal!

I'm not expecting a whopping discount but something would have been nice. Even the offer of a character dinner or something (not that I've been able to get any for my trip anyway!). Just to make me feel less hard done by.

Hey ho. Sorry to all you others whose vacations are a bit scrambled now. This trips been 12 years in the planning, using inheritance from my grandma and is to celebrate 2 x 40th birthdays and 15 years of marriage - so I was kinda hoping it would be perfect.

It certainly is disappointing, but again I hope you don't let it ruin your vacation. There's so much to see and do at Disney, you hopefully will barely miss having the pool. The good thing is that in November, temperatures are usually cool enough that the pool isn't such a must-do. In fact we were there last November, and half the trip was too cool for the pool. (And we are from Northern US almost Canada.)

As others have mentioned, there is a second DVC pool at the resort. It's not that big, so maybe they don't want to advertise that it is available for general use, but my guess is that you could use it, and it certainly would be more convenient than traveling to the other resorts. My recommendation here would be to call and ask about it. IT's called the Hidden Springs Pool

I did a little more research, and while getting to Fort Wilderness is easy, I suspect getting the the Fort Wilderness POOL will be a lesser option as any bus or boat that takes you to Fort Wilderness would then require an internal bus to take you to the pool, unless Wilderness Lodge has a separate bus that takes you right to the pool.

However, the Contemporary is less than a 5-minute ride from the Wilderness Lodge, which might not be too bad depending on how they shuttle you.

Another option is turn a negative into a positive. If you are willing to pack your swim gear and stow it in a locker at MK, you could take a break during the day and head directly to the Contemporary. Whereas getting back to Wilderness Lodge is a 20 minute boat-ride, the Contemporary is about a 2 minute monorail ride away.

Another option (and this probably would only be possible once you are actually there though you could ask about it over the phone as well) is to talk to someone in guest services and see if you could convince them to give you a free upgrade to a Water Parks and More pass. Not 100 % sure they would do it, but if you appear with the right mix of upset but not antagonistic you might just be able to convince them. Then you could travel over to Blizzard Beach for some "pool time".

Again, none of these are as ideal as having the main pool, but unfortunately you can't plan around these closures. They do happen with usually fairly limited notice.

thank you for the encouragement, I'm sure we'll be fine its just when things get changed I wobble!
We have a UK pass hopper pass so will be able to use Blizzard Beach, its just with small children the idea of popping downstairs to the pool is appealing. We thought the same about taking swim suits in the bottom of our bag to the parks and stopping on the way back. The implication from the call centre s that there will be specific transport to the pools so I guess with Fort Wilderness this will be direct? Another question for when I call back.

Hey OP, I just read elsewhere that you WILL be allowed to use the Hidden Springs Pool during your stay - so while it's not the main pool, it might be enough to do what you want with the little ones.
