Hotel Recommendation near Aulani

Hi everyone,
My husband and I will be leaving from the East Coast and have an afternoon flight. Our flight isn't scheduled to land in Hawaii till 9:30PM. By the time we get off the plane, collect our luggage, and get our rental car it's going to be around 10:30 to 11:00PM before we get to Aulani. We were thinking about saving the points on that night and getting a cheaper hotel room to sleep in the night we arrive. The plan would be to get up early the next day and head straight over to Aulani to enjoy the day there and start our vacation. Does anybody have an recommendations for hotels near Aulani or the airport that are relatively low in cost?
Thank you!

There are two new hotels in the town of Kapolei, which is approx 5 mins from Aulani. Both are much cheaper than Aulani.

As far as near the airport goes, there are a couple of hotels but they are not the greatest. This was actually just addressed in this thread

thank you you very much for the input and the link to other thread. Help is always appreciated

The hotels near the airport make Pop Century look like the Grand Floridian, don't bother.

If you're military, there's a hotel on Hickam Air Force Base right next to the airport.

Otherwise, I'd stay at the Hampton Inn in Kapolei. There are a few bars and restaurants within a 2-3 mile radius where you can grab a late dinner.

Or Marriott Ko'Olina Beach club which is within walking distance to aulani. Rates are about $200 a night for a studio.

Maybe consider AirBnB? If you're renting a car, you don't really need to stay near Aulani. You likely will be pretty tired by the time you land, so just drive to wherever you can and deal with Aulani the next morning.

Have the rates gone down? I have paid much more than that. I see it sometimes on redweek but I have never used them. Can you give me some more info or a link @frank808 ? I am looking for the near future....

I didn't even think of air bnb, that's definitely another option to explore. thanks!

I thought most AirBnB type rentals are illegal on Oahu?

Many building within Waikiki have land use designations that allow property owners to rent their units for any amount of time.

Outside of Waikiki, there are only about 100-200 properties that have a transient vacation unit or B&B licence. These are the only properties that can legally rent a room or house for less than 30 days.

Anyone on the island can rent their property for 30 days or more and no special licensing is required.

The proliferation of illegal rentals, both vacation and residential rental units, is a hot button issue on Oahu. The mayor is pushing hard to crack down on illegal rentals and is proposing a minimum $25,000 fine to anyone advertising a rental without a valid TVU or B&B number printed on the ad. I can't imagine this bill will pass, but it's almost certain that some level of increased enforcement will be seen by the end of the year. I wouldn't suggest renting through AirB&B or VRBO unless you're travelling within the next 4-5 months.

My original plan was to rent an airport hotel with a free shuttle. Then get a ride back to airport to get car very early the next morning and head to Aulani/enjoy the resort for the day before room ready.

We ended up just getting an extra night at Aulani and changed our flights to earlier arrival time so didn’t use this plan.

If exhausted almost any clean bed will do.

I have seen rates as low as $209-$489+ depending on dates and time of week. Off peak mid week you can find the cheaper rates. If it is summer, spring break, golden week or holidays it will be at the upper end of the spectrum. The rates i quote is for a studio with a kitchenette. The 1br and larger with kitchen, washer and dryer, living room, etc runs more than this.
