My sister and her family are going into Boston for a Red Sox game. they will need two nights hotel, without breaking the bank or having to mortgage their house for parking. LOL If they have to take the train in to do this, that is fine too. Any suggestions?!

Well, as I recall, the closest is a Howard Johnson's:

1271 Boylston Street
I-90 and Boylston
Boston, MA 02215 US
Phone: 617-267-8300

She can put in dates on hojo.com to get the rates.

Probably not the cheapest. But this will bump up your thread!

We just did this last weekend and stayed at the Doubletree in Cambridge. Parking is expensive ($35/night) but they run a free shuttle to downtown Boston where you can take the T to Fenway. Everyone on our shuttle was headed to the game so they dropped us off close-by and we were able to walk. We took a cab back to the room - I think that cost us around $15 with tip.

The room was GORGEOUS and I could have stayed there a week! Beautiful view of the city. We had a King Suite and it was around $150 booked through Expedia.

The Buckminster is walking distance from Fenway park. Rooms are very small and parking was expensive, but for a hotel in Boston the price wasn't bad.

Stay anywhere along the Green line of the T. It's cheap and easy to ride.
Nothing fancy but only $9 to park and very inexpensiv roomrates

There are several hotels in Brookline that are about 15 minutes to fenway by the T maybe less. It's a good place to google search, going further out along the green line would save then even more. But we've stayed t that holiday inn for cheap weekend stuff at BC.

Let me be the first to say your booking a great vacation! The Howard Johnson's is the closest, but take it from someone who is in the area frequently... the place looks like its very outdated. A quick check of the reviews online show very poor ratings. I'd spring for something else. Be sure to check out all the spots on Landsdowne Street, I would suggest Jillians, Its basically an adult entertainment Complex, with a bowling alley, club, lots to do. Otherwise for a place to stay I would suggest the Hilton, 40 Dalton Street, Rates about $100 a night but very nice and maybe only a 15 minute walk. They do have those little rickshaw bike carts for about $10 bucks everywhere which will get you there quicker.

Thanks! My bro in law grew up in Middleboro, so not terribly far, but they are in Michigan now. They bought four tickets at a charity auction, donated by a guy that is actually a MLB umpire, so their seats will be awesome! Huge Bo Sox fans, so they are looking forward to it! Thanks for the advice.

My parents once stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in Brookline and got a good rate, it is on the Green Line.

Right past the Howard Johnson a new hamburger joint called Tasty Burger opened up. DH and I went there two weeks ago before a game and would definitely go back. No frills but good burgers, shakes and fries. It is on the corner or Boylston St and Yawkey Way right next to Fenway Park.

They should try to go on the tour of Fenway Park.

Across from the Hilton there is also the Sheraton. There is also a small Marriott Courtyard right off Boylston Street on the opposite side of the Pru (near Lord and Taylor and the Westin Hotel).

Another option if they want to save on parking is stay outside the city. There is a Marriott in Quincy- probably free to park. They can drive into the game and park at the Pru for $16 with a game ticket.

If you don't want to drive into downtown Boston, you can stay at the Indigo Hotel on Grove St. in Newton (metro-west) which is just off I-95 (Rte 128) visible to the east. Grove St. is one stop south of I-90 (the pike) or one stop north of Rte. 16 (the marathon route). Rates are as low as $150. depending on the day. Parking is included. Next door is the MBTA Riverside station, direct run to Kenmore Square (the Fenway-neighborhood stop comes first but is a slightly longer walk to the ballpark).

Thanks for this info. DH, Ds 3 and I are looking into summer vacation. Last year went to North Conway, but are thinking about Boston this summer. We have not been to a Sox game and DH is a sports nut. July 5 is called Nova Scotia day, so we may try to attend this. I heard game tickets are hard to get, so I was going to start looking into these. I had not even thought about hotels yet. I have relatives who live in Dorchester, so may look at this. Thanks for the hotel tips.
On another board, I read there is lots in Boston for kids. I read the Childrens museum is great.

The kids love Boston. We are big fans of the children's museum. They used to have a recycle store in there where they sold a bag of stuff for like $5. It made many a halloween costume. If they still have that do it!
Just walking around is fun in Boston! I want to go back. My oldest is thinking of college there so I may get to go after all!

I am a long way from Boston, but DW and I did our honeymoon to the Northeast. We did Cape Cod, Boston, Providence, and into Connecticut (Foxwoods).

I am hardly an expert, and if I had to do it again, I would not stay where we did. But we stayed in Braintree and took the train in. Not sure what line or anything we are on. As others have said, if you stay on the train line (whichever color it is) and you will be just fine!

Another option is the Hampton Inn on the Cambridge-Somerville line. Free parking, walking distance to the Green Line.

OP - I recommend checking MBTA.com. There will be a map of all the train lines and they can compare that to the hotels they are considering. It is possible to stay as far away as Rhode Island and still be on the commuter rail lines. Once you get outside of the immediate city most hotels do not charge for parking and there are some within walking distance of the T.

For Tix check StubHub, Ace Tickets or e-bay. Check around as many have e-tix available and then you won't have to pay for international shipping. Availability and pricing will be driven by how good they are doing. At this point since they've been doing so poorly you might stand a chance of getting cheaper tix by buying now.

There is lots in Boston for kids. The children's museum is great and definitely geared for the under 10 set. The Museum of Science is also really good but it's more for the school age set. The Aquarium OTH would be right up his alley. Duck Tours, swan boats are also great.

If here for July 4th check out the fireworks by the Hatch Shell.

Yankee fan here , but always willing to help, just went a couple of weeks ago, got tix from Stub Hub...altho ACE is better and has a better price...The Westin at Copley Square...parking 16 bucks with game tickets and it is valet....not a bad walk at all, just head up to newbury and walk toward fenway.....a lot of cool rsturants and stores on newbury......hope this helps!!!

Melbrujack,
If you are interested in going to Nova Scotia Day at Fenway. We have a block of tickets set aside for people coming from Nova Scotia. You can check out our website on the blog section. Just google theBluenose BoSox Brotherhood for more information or e-mail me.

We just went to a game this weekend. My sister in law chose the hotel because it was the only one she could find with smoking rooms! I think we could have done much better on both price and quality. We ended up at a Holiday Inn Express in Cambridge. Normally this would work out fine - it is walking distance to the Green Line Lechmere station. But that portion of the Green Line is undergoing maintenance so they are substituting a free shuttle bus into North Station. When there is traffic it is slow!
