We're planning a trip to DL for August. Our last trip, we drove straight through to Anaheim. This trip, we'll be driving to Reno the first day, staying there for the night, then on into Cali the next morning. My husband has family near Merced that we'll be meeting up with for a few hours. We are wanting to find a decent, less than $150/night hotel room between Bakersfield and the Merced area(the closer to Bakersfield the better, as we'll be headed to Anaheim from there). I know Fresno may be a good place, but would really like some honest opinions. TIA.

There are several in Bakersfield - like the Marriott hodad suggested and a Vagabond Inn.
If you're looking for something a little more unique there is the Padre Hotel. Or are you
looking for something outside of Bakersfield? There isn't much between Fresno and
Bakersfield. Visalia has the usual chains; Hampton, Comfort, Marriott. Even Motel 6
and EconoLodge.

Any hotels or motels that you can personally say, "stayed there, would stay again"? The only time I have been in California anywhere north of LA, was at Lake Tahoe.

I've read reviews online of a few places, but I guess I'm looking for more recent reviews.

The LaQuinta Inn in Bakersfield is really nice and found it to be reasonable.

I've stayed at la Quinta in Bakersfield. It's decent but all la quintas are. I've also stayed at the Hampton inn in Visalia if you don't want to drive the extra hour to Bakersfield. Again it was decent a typical Hampton inn. Visalia is a quieter town and has less crime than Bakersfield, and far less than Fresno.
