Hello,

I've been stalking the boards for a while trying to do preliminary research, but finally I'm ready to post!

My in-law's have officially decided to head to Disney for their 40th anniversary! They haven't been in 15 years, but a lot has changed since then.

FIL has a bone marrow cancer, the treatment for this has left him immune-compromised and in frequent back pain. He's too proud to even consider a wheelchair or scooter, but rarely walks more than a mile or 2 (on the treadmill) in a day.

He wants a hotel with a restaurant (especially for breakfast) and easy access to the bus-system/monorail/or boats. Deluxe hotels are out of our budget, and value don't feel 'special' enough for an anniversary treat.

I've narrowed the list to POFQ & POR, AoA suites, CS and possibly CBR. If we don't get a suite, we'd try for two connecting rooms.

We will probably stay 4nights and try to do 4-hours to a half day at each park.

Anyone in a similar situation have any advice on what might be good for him?

To help you out from what you've listed in the way of resorts....POFQ would be my pick..

We do prefer deluxe for ease of travel to different parks but for convenience ....ease on the wallet... compact and moderate... POFQ has been our choice for our last 3 trips with another trip coming up in October

Compact, easy to get around the whole resort... Great food court, theming , busing and the boat to DTD an added treat plus being sisters with POR, pool sharing... Nice walk to Riverside too...

While I have never been in that situation, it sounds to me like POFQ or CS would be best. My DH and I stayed at CBR in 2009 and the resort is very spread out. You can book a preferred room which is closest to the main building but given the situation, I think you will find CSR or POFQ more enjoyable. Now if I had to choose between those two, I would pick POFQ.

Given your situation I would definitely choose POFQ. It's a very compact resort and your FIL would only have a short 5 minute walk to anywhere on its property. Sassagoula Float Works is their quick service location and offers a decent selection of food for all meals as well as snacks.

And as a nurse, because he is immunocompromised I'd recommend cleaning your room yourself prior to him entering it. Mousekeeping does a fantastic job most of the time but in your FIL's case, it's better to err on the side of caution. Bring along items such as Lysol and antimicrobial wipes, products that will eradicate the germs. I'd also recommend calling Disney and explaining the situation as they may have special products that they can use, recommendations on a room, etc.

A deep cleaning can be requested through the disabilities number.

For the OP, check the disabilities board for the reservations phone number for disabilities.

I too would choose POFQ. The smaller size and ease of getting to DTD and the restaurants make t very convent. I also love the romantic atmosphere.

Disney is basically a bed of germs, especially the parks. Is he going to wear a mask at the parks? Just curious. I hope it all works out for ya'll & everyone has fun!:goodvibes

:thumbsup2 I figured that Disney would have some type of service like a deep cleaning but wasn't sure!

The "deep-cleaning" service at Disney can be pretty hit or miss. Definitely go through the process online and then follow up on the phone shortly before the trip. Requests have a tendency to get "lost"...*sigh*.

I always bring my own cleaning supplies and give the room a thorough cleaning before unpacking. Mousekeeping just can't be expected to have everything perfect for those of us who have to be careful about germs and chemicals. I would suggest not having Mousekeeping service during your stay due to the fact that they will bring in outside germs on their cleaning equipment.

You can request a HEPA filter for your room. Mold is fact of life in Florida and the portable HEPA filter I had in my room this past December was a very highly rated on online (we actually bought one after because it is lighter and easier to carry than the one we normally tow with us on car trips). It's noisy but effective.

Wow! So many great ideas, thanks everyone :) glad to hear such positive feedback for POFQ

Looks like

French Quarter will be our headquarters! With a deep clean requested, mousekeeping suspended, and a hepa-filter if we can get one. My husband and I will try our best to beat the folk to the room and give it a good scrub down.

For the parks, he'll likely wear his mask - he usually wears it when he goes to the movies. And we'll have to wipe down all his seats as we move through the park. I'm sort of nursing the idea that we might talk him into a wheelchair if we say its just for the purpose of having 'a clean place to sit in the show, with no one else's germs, and a well supported back.' So many of the shows have bench-style seating after all.

Any word on how well the disney restaurants might handle this situation? I know they are good with dietary requests... But, in theory, all the food should be prepped in the most-germ free already?

Thanks again

I recommend getting a wheelchair from off site. I don't care how "proud" he is, he is going to need one from what you have described. It's just a tool; he would never not wear glasses if he needed them. The idea is the same thing. He will be exhausted just walking from transportation to the main gate.

If you get one from off site, then he will be able to use it at the resort as well. Remember, he doesn't have to sit in it the whole time. He can park it and walk around an area and come back for it, or he can walk and push it.

An off site chair will also be in better condition, more comfortable and much cheaper than renting at the parks. You are also guaranteed a chair then since the ones at the parks are first come-first served.

Check out the stickies on the disAbilities! board if you want some recommendations of vendors.

Good luck and have a great trip!

I know the OP is headed for POFQ (and we love that resort) but in case others have the same immune problems, I just want to post this as I saw it the other day. :thumbsup2

The Hilton right across from the Marketplace has "allergy PURE rooms"

heres a web page that has them listed. Scroll down and you can click on the Pure room and it tells you a little about it.

Please head on over to the Disabilities board, there are many people that can answer your questions there and help you prepare for the best trip possible.

I agree with others about POFQ. Also, have you possibly considered renting points from a DVC member, sometimes of the year that can be less expensive than a Moderate resort.

Call the phone number for Special Services at Disney and let them know that a special cleaning is needed and they will take care of it, I have had to have it done prior to them becoming completely smoke free, they even brought me towels separate from the other guest towels, they were bagged up special and placed in our bathroom for only me and my family to use. They changed the filters and I believe they even shampooed the carpets. This was at AKL.

This past February I requested a "deep cleaning" of our room and when we checked in we were in the cleanest looking and cleanest smelling hotel room I've ever been in. My chief allergy is only mold which is insignificant compared to your F-I-L's situation. By clean smelling room I mean that there was no hint of mold or mildew (I did request a top floor which makes this easier in FL) and for once there were no harsh chemical smells in the room.

Also, perhaps in the space for food allergies on any TS ADRs you should list immune compromised. I expect that will have the same result as a noted allergy with a chef coming out to speak with you to learn the best way to assure they are meeting your needs. Obviously, steer clear of buffets.

Both Port Orleans resorts, Riverside and French Quarter, actually have a room assignment team that does still look at Email requests. It is always best to request what you want (the deep cleaning is guaranteed if you request it, location etc. is only a request.) But many of us familiar with POR and POFQ will send a FAX to the Room Allocation Team 3 to 5 days before arrival to explain our reasons for our requests. They have been extremely good at meeting them whenever possible. The FAX for POFQ is: 407-934-5353. This link from another page is all about FAX Requests: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3116216

I hope that you are all able to have a wonderful trip, staying well in the process.
