Is it common to have $30 or more in charges beyond the listed room rate? I have an $89 nightly rate quoted but out the door the rate is $121. Seems crazy. Is it s bad hotel or is the the norm?

That seems about right. My confirmation for Legoland says nightly resort fee of $25. Even the total taxes (just taxes) for our 5-night stay at Park Vue inn is 157.90

It's not just your hotel, it's all hotels in California. The biggest tax of the bunch is the Transient Occupancy Tax (probably called California Occupancy Tax on your bill). In Anaheim I believe the rate is 15%. There are other taxes too but that's the biggest one.

Unfortunately, it sounds about right. $89 plus about $10-15 for misc. charges, plus tax. I really don't get charging one price for the hotel, then adding a mandatory resort fee.

They are just doing what the airlines are doing. People constantly complain about them but not enough people refuse to book at hotels that charge them. One of the big benefits of the Candy Cane Inn is that they don't charge any of that nonsense. Plus breakfast is included at no extra charge.

I think ALL hotels must charge the room tax. You just need to check to see if that tax is included in the quoted price when comparing rates.

It's not the tax but the fees (and taxes on those fees of course) that the op is noticing.

Someone mentioned candy cane. Of course they don't have to charge the fee, since I have read that part of it is for ART, and they were lucky enough to grandfather in with their shuttles.

The taxes should be about $15 (17.25% in anaheim). And a $3 resort fee. Above that ask what the fees are. Could be parking.

Never could figure out why they don't just have the tax in the room price? I can see the parking fees. If you don't have a car you're in luck.

When I'm figuring out what our hotel total will be I calculate tax and occupancy fees at 18%. However any other fees should be clearly outlined at the time of reservation. For example many resort like hotels charge a daily resort fee that is supposed to cover things like wifi and water bottles (DLR hotels do not charge this). There is often a daily parking charge as well. These shouldn't be a surprise though so unless they're clearly lined out on your hotel bill I would ask about them.

As a previous Good Neighbor hotel reservationist, I know they train us to state "room rate plus taxes and fees." If the guest doesn't ask, we never told to total for a non-prepaid room. For a prepaid room, we would state the total, but not a breakdown. 18% taxes/fees is the norm for the Anaheim resort area.
