I remember a few threads about cleaning the hot tubs in the 1 or 2 bedrooms before using them. :confused3 But I forget what people recommended to use? I won't have a car and would like to bring whatever I need with in my checked luggage. Thanks, Penny:upsidedow

The reccomended method by whirlpool manufacturers is bleach, but if you use automatic dishwasher detergent, it also has enough bleach in it to do the same thing. Just be sure you also run a full tub of clear rinse water after the cleaning run. I usually use bleach in my Jacuzzi at home, but at Disney, I use the Auto dishwasher detergent. I run a full tub with auto dishwasher detergent (one packet) and let the jets run for 10 minutes. Then I drain and run another full tub of clear water and run the jets another 5 minutes for rinsing.

We also use the dishwasher, (not sink) detergent. Works just fine.

A while back a "recipe" for tub cleaning was posted. I think that it was ~1 cup of bleach plus ~1/4 cup dishwasher detergent. :confused3 I ended up using 1/2 bottle of the small bleach & probably 1 cup of dishwasher detergent. (1/4 cup didn't seem like enough, so I kept adding.) I let the jets run for 10 minutes with the bleach/detergent in it and then let is set for 10 more minutes. After that, I drained the tub and ran clear water into it. Then I ran the jets for 10 more minutes to rinse everything out. It worked great and gave me a good peace of mind.

This is good info to have. We normally skip the whirlpool use, but think I'll just pick up some bleach and run it through as suggested. :)

Glad I found this post. Have stayed away from the "tub" due to concerns about germs. Now I'll just pack a little more dishwasher detergent.

Thanks

Thanks so very much for posting this. I thought it was dishwasher packets. :) DH is just on his way out to go food shopping and we added this to the list. Thanks again, Penny:goodvibes

We don't have whirlpool tubs in my house, so on our first stay with one at VWL I set one up for my son to soak in... I was shocked and whipped my son out of the water so fast when the water started filling up with a ton of black particles after I turned it on. I've been afraid to use the tubs since then. :lmao:

It's good to know, that I can clean it myself & how to do so - thanks for posting!

The "black stuff" is the dried mold that forms in the pipes when they are not used all the time. That's why they need to be routinely cleaned. That's also why the bleach in the auto dishwasher detergent works. It kills the mold.

If you have access to Chlorine tablets for a pool they work great. It takes a little longer for them to dissolve, crush them while in the bag with the heal of a shoe. We always pack three tablets in a zip lock for the flight and fill tub with the hottest water, after 15 minutes turn on the jets and run for 15 minutes, rinse for ten. They are easy to pack and if you have them accessible it's a easy fix.
