We are hosting a new years day party. I plan to have several dips and pork/sauerkraut in a crock pot. I wanted to do a hot dog bar with chili and other fixings.

How would I serve the dogs? I was thinking of cooking them on the foreman grill. Could i just put them on a platter with foil over? Or would they keep in a crockpot? I don't want to dry them out.

You can keep them in a crock pot with water, it will keep them from drying out and warm.

This. WHen my DD's school has functions they have a few crockpots with a little water and hot dogs and steam them.

Yum! Sounds good!

I usually boil my hotdogs, rather than putting them on a grill or on a pan. Not sure that cooking a hotdog is something you could really mess up though.

In terms of serving, not sure. Here is a thread on another board with some ideas (crock pot, chafing dish, renting a hot dog roller thing, etc.) http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/382144

Anyone remember that thread a few months ago where the poster was slammed for doing a hot dog bar for a family get-together?

I heart hot dogs so I hope your NYE is scrump!

My favorite way to do hot dogs or precooked sausages is to put an inch or so of water and a tablespoon of oil in a skillet. Put your dogs in while the water is cold and cover. Once liquid begins to boil remove the cover and let the liquid boil off then 'fry' the dogs in the skillet (oil in water transfers to the skin of the dog but not excessivly) till they begin to brown. Keep them moving so you get color on all sides.

Juciyness of boiled dogs but the crisp bite of a grilled dog.

I'd put them in your crock on warm.

Yes, that was Hot Dog Gate 2011.

Please remember to only invite those that don't abstain from the horrors that hot dogs are. :rotfl2:

I did hot dogs for a birthday party in a crock pot. Worked great!

I've just got to say please for the love of all things holy don't serve those cheap, crappy .99 hot dogs. Spring for some nice all beef ones if you're going to do a hot dog bar.

Maybe hot dog talk should be banned like religion and politics. Seems to be a controversial topic here on the DIS.

I've got to say, we are particular about hot dogs in this family. I am cheap, but will spring for the Ball Park brand because we like them.

However... I tried the Bar S brand, and holy cow, those hot dogs are pretty darned good!!!

Best hot dogs are the big giant ones from Costco... Served on those yummy buns they have there too... Yum!!!

You know how Sonic offers all different types of dogs? Maybe do something along those lines like a Chicago Dog, NY dog, etc.

PS... love the hot dog gate controversy thread...
