Hostess gift?

I am not good at this and need suggestions. Usually I socialize with people who have kids, so I bring something kid friendly, cookies or what have you. Or I offer to bring a dish. But tonight I'm going to an "empty nest" couple, who say they've already bought all the food so not to bring any. I don't know if they drink alcohol (I don't, but I am happy to give someone else a bottle of wine if I know they'd like it).

Chocolate? Something else? There is another family going and they already told me they're bringing flowers, or I'd do that.

I think your idea sounds great. If he golfs, maybe some golf balls...if she gets her nails done, maybe some pretty polish and I couple of files, with some chocolate in a cute basket. Maybe a gift card to a special restaurant. Or what about making them a special CD if you have ITunes....like songs from the late 70's or something if you have it. That would be sweet and personal...

Wine and chocolate is always good, though

What about some little shaped or scented soaps they can put out for guests? Perhaps with those disposable decorative hand towels.

What is the event you will be attending? Can you ask another attendee if they know what alcohol is advisable? That would help to make suggestions for you.

Elegant dinner- chocolates or a desert- cheesecake, pastries etc

Barbecue-specialty barbecue sauces or an apple pie, specialty beer or homemade sangria, maybe a nice fruit salad.

Hard to make suggestions without more details about what you will be attending and with whom. If its a boss my suggestions would be different from a friend's parents, kwim?
