My parents and I were invited to a engagement/birthday party (for the bride) in March. And at the bottom, it said "oh, btw, it is a potluck". No clue as to what type of main dish would be served to plan the right thing to bring. I had alternate plans (can't stand bride or groom, so I would have had other plans regardless), and Mom got sick, so my family did not attend. But we were completely insulted and thought it was super tacky. My parents would have brought something, but my Mom who loves to cook refused to actually do so. It would have been a store bought item.
Now our family does a lot of potlucks as part of the holidays. Having one for Mother's Day as a matter of fact. It was just the way that was handled. There is no way that type of get together should be a potluck. Apparently the bride's father just moved and did not have money to contribute. Oh and groom's family brought the drinks. If they can only be bothered to bring a couple liters of soda (non-drinking family for the most part), why should I be expected to bring anything more than that?
