Horrifying and Extremely Sad

impressionable young minds DONT have a clear vision of reality. they smoke because they grow up around it. same with drinking. child abusers were more often than not abused as children. no......we cant change the world but if keeping just some away from the mindless violence saves someone from a life full of it..........i consider that a win.

Then it is the parent's job to keep these impressionable minds from watching shows they should not. Taking a show that is aimed at adults off of the air because one murderer attempted to justify his actions by blaming the show is not what I want done.

perhaps we are both in over our heads, i do not understand the draw of dexter and you have no idea what big brother is about.

I watched about 3 seasons of Big Brother before I got bored with it. I know exactly what it is about.

I bet Dexter gets cancelled... I never really wanted to watch it but less so now.

agnes!

Look, I'm not saying I *want* the show to get cancelled, but somehow...this news....it makes the whole 'serial killer TV show this isn't at all real nudge nudge wink wink' not as much fun, less attractive. I'm all for freedom of the airwaves and people getting to watch whatever they want (*seriously*). This news might make advertisers a little nervous and if I worked on that show this news would give me pause, that's all.

I was just trying to say that the central premise never appealed to me and less so now.

agnes!

Just thought I'd include my second post along with my original post in this thread.

agnes!

PS - OT: Sparx, I always love your contributions here on the DIS, you have a very reasoned approach to things. Hope your school year is going well.

Dexter doesn't have any advertisers to worry about. ;)

I've SEEN BB and I have no idea what its about. I haven't seen Dexter cause we don't have premium cable here. That being said I DO NOT think the show is responsible for the boy killing his brother. Everything I've ever read/seen/ heard about sociopaths leads me to the conclusion that they are born that way. He was likely always going to want to kill somebody and he chose his brother to be the first. Chilling, very chilling

thats actually a very scary thought.
I want to point out that I don't believe that that's what people are doing at all. I think many believe that the acts are horrifying but just fantasy and enjoy the show for other reasons. I did get the distinct impression in your posts that you believe that fans of the show are somehow glorifying it or implying that the content is OK. I don't believe that.

Perfect. :thumbsup2

In my reality, giving up "rights" is NEVER a win.

let me get this straight, killing is ok as long as the people you are killing are killers. and Dexter who had urges to kill as a child (sounds a lot like the boy this whole thing was started over doesnt it) was trained up to do it as an adult and that is also ok. and your big brother comparison was ridiculous.............disclaimer.............i dont take these exchanges very seriously i am not mad and i dont have it out for you. it is just spirited debate..........:)

I think you have quite a way to go to get your wish:
The fourth season premiere of Dexter, starring Michael C. Hall as Miami's infamous fictional cop/serial killer, averaged 1.5 million viewers -- the most watched telecast on Showtime since Nielsen began its current rating measurement of the service in 2004.

Most TV's now have the V-Chip option. Censor in your own home, not mine.

I am so out of the loop. I hadn't heard of this show until I read the article. I don't watch t.v. much at all. I mostly watch news shows.
