Horrible Smell at Pop Century

Hey all, this is something I should have posted during the summer, but another post about Pop made me remember this.

First let me say that I love Pop Century. I have gone two years in a row and probably will be going again this summer. I think for the money the place is awesome. My wife and daughter feel the same.

The last two trips we stayed in the preferred 60s section. I stay at the side where Mogli and Beleu are in the first building closest to classic hall. Has anyone noticed when walking down the stairs on that side of the building at the bottom of the stairs is a God Awful smell. It is at the bottem of the Yo-Yo staircase where you would walk down to go to the pool or classic hall.

The last two trips we noticed this smell and my guess is that it is some kind of fertilizer they use. I can't believe nothing has been done about this because the smell is so consistent and overpowering. It actually smells like raw sewage or human waste. Has anyone else noticed this.

If I was going down to eat I would take the elevator so I would not have to smell this before I ate dinner.

I would hope that you reported this to the CM or Maintance

Actually I didn't. It really wasn't a huge deal because it was just that area. It didn't make my stay any less magical. If it was in my room I would have definitely said something, but I just assumed it was fertilizer.

I can't believe I was the only one who smelled this, so I'm sure some of the management is aware of this.

Yes!! We have stayed there four different occassions and every time I smell it! My husband says I am crazy but I have a very sensitive sense of smell and numerous allergies. I too thought it was fertilizer. But thanks, now I can tell my husband I am not so crazy after all! :rotfl2:

It's funny but we get that same kind of smell at POR. And have noticed it in other areas around WDW. I was told it is actually decaying plant material. They try to keep up with it, but with the heat and humidity it's sometimes hard to get to it all before it starts to stink. And stink it does.....Yuck!!!

I could be wrong, but I think the smell is related to chlorine. I also noticed it, and everytime I have noticed it was around water - pools, fountains. I noticed this year at AS Movies, it was near the pools. Chlorine really does have an awful smell if there is a lot of it.

My guess would be the type of mulch they use. When I did my undergrad, we dreaded "mulch season." That said, I didn't notice it when we were there in early August, but it may not have been mulch time. Certain types of mulch smell horrible and will make you think that it's manure or whatever. Mulch is often found in areas near the pools (around the surrounding trees, bushes and such) which may be what mdinecola smelled as well.

I always thought it was the sulfur water. Especially if they irrigate with it.

It could simply be the wood mulch they use for landscaping. Every year when we do ours my house stinks outside for a week.

They use a lot of "reclaimed" water here in Florida to irrigate with - I hardly notice it anymore, but visitors staying with us always say PEEEE UUUUU when the sprinklers start up in places, especially when they're close to them! (last time I remember getting a big whiff and it bothered me was when I was at a traffic light and the sprinklers in the median went off next to the car :earseek: )

One of the "perks" of living in Florida I guess!

I agree with nowellsl, I also think it is the sulphur in the water. It has a disgusting smell. My aunt lives in florida, and when her sprinklers are going, OMG, the smell is almost unbearable!!!

I don't know about the water, although it can get pretty stinky, but I do know that when we have smelled that 'rotting' smell at POR it wasn't near any water!! In fact, the worst place was when we were in Magnolia Terrace, second level. When we would come out of our room, the smell would knock you over. But, after you walked down the corridor about 15 feet, it didn't smell anymore. Got the same type thing in other areas too. It did smell like something was decomposing. In fact, when we stayed at my dad's condo in Pompano Beach, we smelled the exact same thing. Yes, we were right on the Atlantic but the smell came from the area of the bunches of palm trees...it was worse there than at WDW. I think maybe because at WDW the groundskeepers are so good about clean-up.

It's Cypress mulch I noticed the same smell at home when mulching with cypress mulch esp if the mulch had gotten slightly damp in the bags which often happens with the plastic bags and high humidity. Usually once the mulch was down a few days I didn't notice it anymore at home but at disney they constantly watering so I can see where the smell could stay for weeks months years lol

I agree awlful odor but cypress is about the cheapest mulch you can get I think and FL has plenty of cypress trees.

I have noticed the smell in many places around WDW, both at the parks and resorts. It's not the water (sulphur water is stinky but not that bad!) and not cypress mulch (which I actually thinks smells kind of good!). It smells like horse pee to me, but since there are not a lot of horses in WDW :flower: , I do believe it's chicken poop used as fertilizer. I did visit a home care patient once who lived on a chicken farm, and the smell was pretty foul (pun intended), although I can't swear it was the same smell.

I'm surprised that WDW uses such smelly fertilizer, but it doesn't bother me too much now that I realize what it is.

I think it's the boxwood bushes. Smells like cat pee.

I wish I hadn't read this thread...I've never noticed the smell at POP before, but now that the idea has been implanted in my head..I'm sure I'll notice it when we arrive in January.
