(Hopefully) Simple DVC Question

I'm still new and learning the ropes to DVC and I've tried to find the answer to this in my paperwork, but there's so much, I'm just going to ask the experts.

We joined last year and banked those points (and the points we got for free for the promotion they were running) - so those points are going to pay for this year's vacation.

This means, our 2016 points will be banked this year to be used for next year's trip. So my simple question - it seems like it has an obvious answer, but I want to be 100% sure on it: Those points are good for the calendar year of 2017, correct? Or the use year (either way, December is when ours rolls over, so it amounts to the same). I just wanted to be completely sure that it's not a year from the moment we bank - for instance, if we call this summer, they won't expire next summer. We're wanting to use them in November of 2017.

And as a mini-question - we'll have 13 points left over after this year's vacation - there is nothing else to use points for, except for rooms, correct? I would love if they would have some additional perks for any leftover points, like using them for Mousekeeping :P. I'm just going to think of those remaining points as a few of the free ones we got for signing up, so it won't sting as bad if we have to let them expire.

First of all your use year runs December 1 thru November 30. So not quite exactly a calendar year. Be aware of that difference!

If you have already banked this year's points, they are now part of your next "use year". Log onto dvcmember.com to see which use year you're referring to. The "2016 points" in your case are actually for use between December 1, 2016 thru November 30, 2017.

I'd probably try to rent those remaining points out, myself. Letting them expire is like burning cash, to me at least. Usually there's a minimum number for rental brokers to work with you but they'll be the best to guide you in that process. Others will have more info and other ideas, too. Check out dvcrequest.com

OP, recommend you get a spreadsheet together than you understand.
Include:
Points and original UY
Points banked
Points borrowed
Trips planned
Make the spreadsheet out for at least three years, banked points, current year, and points that are available to be borrowed.
Remember it is when you travel that the points must be available to make a reservation.

AshleeH,

Yes -- use a spreadsheet until you get the hang of it! Be sure to add the "banking date" to the spreadsheet. You are currently in your 2015 UY. Behaviors of a Dec UY:
  • 2014 UY
    • Travel window: Dec 1,2014 through Nov 30, 2015
    • Banking Deadline: July 31, 2015 (points banked will be used between Dec 1, 2015 through Nov 30, 2016)
  • 2015 UY
    • Travel window: Dec 1,2015 through Nov 30, 2016
    • Banking Deadline: July 31, 2016 (points banked will be used between Dec 1, 2016 through Nov 30, 2017)
  • 2016 UY
    • Travel window: Dec 1,2016 through Nov 30, 2017
    • Banking Deadline: July 31, 2017 (points banked will be used between Dec 1, 2017 through Nov 30, 2018)
  • (etc)
