Hope DVC is ready for the cars in 2022!

I think COVID sped up what was going to happen anyways. I've seen it said that DME ridership was declining consistently even pre-COVID and Disney was paying Mears a fixed cost on their contract. COVID and the associated drop in resort guests probably made that arrangement unsustainable.

I don't think that the DME change will make a lot of DVC members start renting cars. I feel like DVC members already either drive or rent cars at a higher rate than regular hotel guests. I don't see this pushing DVC to start charging for parking.

It's hot every summer, I don't think any more people will be passing out in lines than did in years past. A lot of the standby lines are actually shorter than they were pre-COVID and they move at a good clip since there isn't a FP+ line holding everyone up.
good post. I disagree about passing out in the heat. In the past no one has had to stand in line for 1-2 hrs. in 90F+ heat and humidity with a mask on. ESP little ones who dehydrate so easily. just sayin! They did have a problem when parks reopened last summer/fall, and there were no where near as many people as there are now.

I think if they start having too many issues, they will simply use virtual queues more, the code is there and they can even just use virtual queues during certain times of the day if needed. They may also have to rework beverage policies while in queues somehow as well.

Or restart fastpass

Fastpass will double those standby lines. The wait times aren’t that high. They’re lower than they were this time last year.
Exactly, fastpass would only make the problem worse, unless they did away with FP+ and went to Disneyland's style where you don't pick a window of time, it is assigned based on when you get the FP and only day of after you enter the park.

This time last year the parks weren’t open as I recall

We caught the beginning of spring break crowds early March, still at 35% capacity. The wait times were indeed long near the weekend once it got past 11 am, even for non eticket attractions

Everything is pointing to them increasing park capacity, sooner vs later (June?) via the CM recalls. Hoping our annual 4th of July trip isn’t worse than the norm as to standby with no FP in place.
I hope not, dont give them any ideas ;)
Really appreciate the maxpass at DL but only have purchased for 4 days. Not something I really want to work into WDW budget over multiple days & trips.

I just read an article about the huge increase in rental car prices, up to $700/day. A Car Rental Apocalypse Is Coming: Here’s What You Need To Know (forbes.com)

Maybe there won't be a parking problem cause no one will be able to afford to rent a car.
🤣

Car rental companies dumped their inventory due to COVID. They are going to see money to be made and rush to buy more cars, which will bring prices down. We'll see where this thing settles. :)

I suspect parking at VGF is still going to be hard.

Due to the change we'll likely rent a car, visit and stay at Universal for a few days and eat and shop outside WDW while staying there. I don't mind the change but find it odd as I believe it will likely cost Disney more then they will save by shutting down Magical Express. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I think a lot of us are forgetting that DME hasn’t been around since the inception of DVC. Disney will be fine, we’ll be fine.
I agree, almost all people who never rented cars in the past are not going to suddenly rent now just to go back and forth to MCO. They don't want the hassle of having to drive and park a car every time they want to go to to the parks. They will take a cab or Uber/Lyft to the resorts since they would rather just want to get on a bus, boat , monorail or skyliner to go to the parks.
