My niece (pseudo, but that's beside the point) started working a couple of months ago at Hooters. While it isn't the job I'd prefer for her, I thought it was pretty harmless.

My mom talked to her the other day and she was in a limo riding to a charity event where she and other Hooters servers were bowling (in little pink dresses).

Today she called and said that she was chosen to be in the Hooters Girls calendar, but she has to "tone up" and lose a few pounds (she's a very pretty girl, size 4, but I guess they think that's too big). She told her they fly the calendar girls to the Bahamas and other such places to photograph them.

This is all making me a little nervous for her. Should I be? Has anyone here worked for Hooters? Am I just being paranoid?

I don't know about Hooters-- but a classmate of mine was a Miller Lite Girl a while ago.

She was flown all over and did all types of appearances.

I've heard that Hooters girls have similar gigs. I'm sure it's harmless. She's over 18, right?

Yep. She'll be 21 in April.

I work with a guy who dates a Hooters girl.

Apparently, if the prettier they are, the more they get. They are a VERY reputable company. I wouldn't worry. They have a bad rep, but I don't see anything wrong with them. They know how to make money, they have good chicken wings, end of story. It's good business, and they reward those who help them make money!

Tell her to have fun in the Bahamas! :beach:

It'll be ok. I really doubt a company like Hooters is going to let anything happen. It'd be really bad publicity.

It's not a place I'd want my dd working. I'd prefer she'd work somewhere she'd be valued for how well she does a job--not how she looks. I understand they're not doing anything wrong or immoral--it's the focus on appearance that bothers me.

And that whole losing weight thing would freak me out. Telling a size 4 girl that she needs to lose weight is how eating disorders begin.

I agree, and I like Hooters but not the fact that the girls have to wear short shorts and have thier "Hooters" shown.

It could be worse...Hooters is probably pretty harmless. At least she will get to see some beautiful parts of the world for free.

I agree. She has always been very appearance-focused, though. Ever since she was very little. Her mother is the same.

I am a little worried about the weight thing, but she's never let it be an issue for her. I remember when Lindsay Lohan was first becoming known and my niece liked her because she was not super skinny. My niece has a fairly large (naturally) chest for someone her size, so that might make her look a little larger, too. She has gone up a size in the past couple of years (she used to wear a 2), so going back down wouldn't be horrible for her.

That's where the problem lies for me. She's a size 4 and has to "tone up". That's bull.

Sorry. I absolutely HATE Hooters. I met the manager of my local Hooters once and he was a pig. He told me that I'd make a great Hooter's Girl, I'd just have to lose A LOT of weight, but if my chest stayed the same, I'd get great money. He's very lucky he didn't get slapped or a drink in his face.:sad2:

*Also, really, there wings aren't that good.:confused3

i am not fond of their wings. but as for a free trip to the bahamas? i say go for it.

I agree. Another organization contributing to the crassness of America. I certainly wouldn't want my daughters working there -- and I know they wouldn't lower themselves to work at such a place.

I wouldn't want my daughter working there, either, but since I don't have a daughter I don't have to worry about it.

I didn't expect any different, but you really didn't have to be so rude in your response.

I love Hooters wings. But the uniforms are ridiculous. I mean, they aren't even flattering. I don't get it.

Sorry, my response wasn't aimed directly at you.

Maybe they just want her to tone her abs a little bit and make things a little more defined? I've seen Hooters girls that were way beyond a size four.

I have no problems with Hooters and if there was one nearby, I'd definitely be applying to be a Hooters girl.

I'm not going to admit anything about any previous employment I may or may not have been party to. :cool1:

That being said, I know a bit about Hooters Girls, and I can tell you that a lot of people have an image of the place that's nowhere near reality. I can't tell you how many "boys nights out" or bachelor party groups arrive at any given Hooters location every week expecting ... well, expecting something that Hooters is not.

It's not a loud, trashy, smoke-filled, sexual harassment lawsuit in progress. The "Hooters Girl Image" is supposed to be All-American girl next door mixed with California surfer chick. The employee handbook has more rules and regulations concerning dress code than some offices I've worked in!

No tattoos, no body or facial piercing (including tongue), only two earrings per ear. One necklace is allowed but it must be a thin chain or small pendant or locket. No chokers, beads, or collars. Hair is always to be worn loose but "styled" (we never did figure out what this meant, but they seem to want you to use hairspray), no ponytails or pigtails, no headbands or scrunchies, no large hair clips. Makeup must be worn to emphasize the features, but cannot be over-the-top. If you show up sporting the Tammy Faye look, you get sent into the washroom to tone it down. Your fingernails have to be short and clean; fake nails are only allowed providing they aren't too long or noticable. No weird nailpolish colors such as metallics, black, blue, etc. Only reds, pinks, and neutral colors, and all nails must be painted the same color. No nail art or nail jewelry.

The Hooters Girl tank top must be worn "sized to fit" which means not loose and baggy but also NOT a few sizes too small, no trailer trash look. Shirt must be tucked into shorts at ALL times -- absolutely no midriff showing, ever. Shorts must also be fitted properly so as not to be too loose (if another girl's slim hand can easily fit between your shorts leg opening and your skin, it's too loose, and that way they ensure that it's unlikely a man's larger hand could fit either) and not too tight either; no "cheek" showing, no plumber's butt, and it should not be possible to tell what type of panties you're wearing underneath. Panties are about the only garment that Hooters doesn't regulate, because they feel that if your underwear or pantyline is visible in any manner, then your shorts are unacceptably tight. You absolutely must wear a bra at all times no matter what size your breasts are, and I did meet several Hooters Girls with athletic builds and small chests who probably didn't need a bra normally. The bra can only be white or nude-colored; no black (because the tank top is white) or other colors. There are to be no bra straps showing at any time. You must always wear pantyhose under your shorts even during warm weather, and the hose have to be the "tanned" color; no nude or black hose. The only socks allowed are those ubiquitous white ankle socks sold in packs of 6 at Wal-Mart. Finally, your shoes must be white sneakers or hi-tops, made of leather or faux leather; no canvas and no mesh. Any logo or brand label on your sneaker must be small and not overpower the design of the shoe.

Hooters Girls aren't even close to resembling cocktail waitresses in short skirts and high heels. The company has a very specific "wholesome" image they want the girls to fit into. In a lot of ways it's a much safer, less trashy, and more appropriate place for a girl to work than the local neighborhood bar.

First of all places like Hooters, aims for a specific customer, MEN.They are selling an image. Men are probably the majority giving up the money,so if someone thinks Hooters is low class, what would you say if your boyfriend or husband, dad went there?
Your neice won't be a Hooter's girl forever, age does thing to a body, etc so let her enjoy this time, she is an adult. Let her make her money,go places, meet different people, be a calender girl-how many people do you know can say they have been one?
