I read that when making a reservation, I need to pay the full amount upfront. Is this true?

Yes, it's all done in advance =)

It is, but you can cancel it without penalty, I think before 24 hours, and you can always change. For example I made our reservations about two months ago, but didn't order my DDE card until a couple of weeks ago. When it comes in all I have to do is call and they are supposed to refund your discount.

What are the odds of getting a reservation anytime Dec 19-26? I know its late but just curious?

I only made mine this summer, so probably pretty good. It sounded like they were pretty open when I asked to be seated upstairs. We're going the 20th. The later ones are usually emptier (and you get to maximize park time), and you can use the DDE discount at the 9:30.

We're going the HDDR the 1st week of Jan and I had no problem getting the exact date and time we wanted for the show. Good luck!
