hooney baked ham--worth the $$$

I have had them and I am a ham lover, prefer it over turkey any day, but I didn't find it that special. I just bought an Amish Farms spiral ham from our local store. I have had a good spiral from Aldi's too.

I'm debating on a half ham vs a whole ham. Does anyone have any experience with the whole hams from Honey Baked?

I haven't tried it, but I have seen some recipes on maybe Recipe Czar ? (just google HBH copy cat recipes) there were some folks who gave recipes and said the secret is they glaze it and then use one of those little kitchen torches on it,like the ones you use for creme brulee, I got one of the litttle torch things at Ross but haven't tried it. We have a Honeybaked Ham here and also a place called Heavenly Ham, you can get boxed luncehes or buy the hams...I don't eat pork, but I know people that love these hams,I may splurge one day..I usually get Gwaltney spiral hams for about 1.67 a pond before holidays and they come w/a glaze packet. This christmas we are doing homemade fried chicken.:rotfl::rotfl:

I went to a community dinner at my FIL church last night and they GAVE me a 10 pound Honey Baked ham. It had a $63 price tag on it! YIKES!

With a little creativity and good use the bone, I figure we can eat for about 2 weeks on a 10 pound ham!

I have NEVER had a fatty ham from Honeybaked, quite the opposite.

This is the ONLY ham that I will buy, well worth the money. Their turkey breast is awesome too!

If you live close to a store go there and get one slice and try it.
We love love love it at our house. last year I went and got my christmas ham early and put it in the frig.....big misteak....had to go back and get more ham!
my mom eats a slice while i am driving home with it!!!!!!!
We love the turkey also!

OM you are so blessed!!!!!!!!!! What a great gift.

We always get a Honey Baked Ham for Thanksgiving and Xmas, go to the store and pick it out. But this year, I was not pleased with the ham and have decided to just buy one from Trader Joe's for Xmas. I think they've cut back on the quality. Although our HBH store merged with Heavenly Ham this past year and maybe their distributor is different. One year we got a ham from Wegmans and it was just as good. So maybe as long as you buy an upscale ham, not an el cheapo ham, it might work just as well.

JMHO

I used to always get a delicious Honeybaked ham until this past Thanksgiving. My mom gave us a ham and I found a honeybaked ham recipe on Allrecipes.com. The ham turned out waaaaaay better than any I have ever bought. I was so proud of my "following directions/cooking" skills!

Obviously like any food, it's a matter of personal preference. My MIL only ever buys HBH for the holidays. I like them but don't love them. I actually strongly prefer the Kirkland brand spiral ham that Costco carries. Those are delicious and way cheaper!

Oh and ftr, the last time I got a HBH, it was extremely fatty. I was quite annoyed.

Just another brand to chime in with--Neiman's Ranch. Pricey, but more delicious than HBH with no funky nitrates. A true treat, for sure.

Has anyone had one of these? Is it worth the $$? I found a coupon and I could get an 8 lb ham for $43! At the grocery store I could get one for $10. Are they worth it?

Thanks

Personally, I get the "ham" at costco and its great and Much less! :thumbsup2

1 - fully cooked presliced half ham (bone-in)
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground clove
1/8 teaspoon ground paprika
dash ground ginger
dash ground allspice

  1. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl
  2. Lay down a couple sheets of wax paper onto a flat surface, such as your kitchen counter. Pour the sugar mixture onto the wax paper and spread it around evenly.
  3. Pick up the ham & roll it over the sugar mixture so that it is well coated. Do not coat the flat end of the ham, just the outer surface.
  4. Turn the ham onto its flat end on a plate. Use a blowtorch with a medium-size flame to caramelize the sugar. Wave the torch over the sugar with rapid movements, so that the sugar bubbles and browns, but does not burn. Spin the plate so that you can torch the entire surface of the ham. Repeat the coating & caramelizing process until the ham has been well glazed. Serve cold or reheated, just like the real thing.
