Homework on Halloween

Teachers who give Homework tonight are just being MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Luckily when I was a kid I went to Catholic School and always had the next day off!!!!

The public system in our area does not even have school tomorrow!!!!

So my kids, who are in the private system but share busses with the public system, have to get on the bus at 7:30 instead of 8:00 because they are doing one big bus loop (about 1.5 hours on the bus!)

Even the high school kids have tomorrow off.

1.5 hours on a bus to go to school?? wow that is nuts..I would just dirve them myself instead of having them take that long of a bus ride.

My 7th grade DD has decided that this year would be her last to Trick or Treat. THEN her basketball coach scheduled a practice!!!!
Ok, so she decided that she would get home to get in maybe 1/2 hour of TorTing.....she's a little bummed, but still ok with it.

Comes home last night, and NOW he tells them that after practice he scheduled a SHOE FITTING!!!!! :sad2:
What a moron. I know that some 12 year olds don't TorT anymore, but my kid wants to do it one more time. They have to grow up so fast at everything else.

She's heartbroken. She had this cool costume, had plans with her cousins and sister. It's not so much even the candy, just the excitement of dressing up and running around! I feel so so bad for her.

If my son has homework, we will rush through it and get it done together. We have plans this evening and this once, we won't let homework interfere.

My son (6th grade) has homework tonight, but only because he planned it that way. He gets a packet each week, so he can plan around family committments etc. I much prefer weekly packets at the elementary level!

What I don't like is extra holiday homework. When my older son was in 6th grade, Halloween was on Sunday and his teacher gave them a 22 page "Halloween Fun" packet - that was required - over Halloween weekend. She honestly thought it was fun - I thought it was mean and can still work up a steam about it, as can my son.

My 8th grader will have normal classes and normal homework today, though there are many students planning on dressing up.

We always have off Halloween- so it's not an issue. DS was actually off for staff development day's yesterday and today.

I don't know if the kids have homework tonight or not but they will have such a sugar rush from the school party they should get it done in no time if there is any :thumbsup2

IMO (I have no kids, but I certainly remember being one!) getting homework tonight would be a HUGE bummer. I might even go so far as to say the teacher was a tad heartless. However, the adult in me looks at the future of education and compares our education standards to some around the world and says "Homework is way more important than candy and shaving cream."

But yeah, I'd still be bummed to have homework tonight.

I doubt my K and 3rd gradrer will have homework but wouldn't be suprised if my 6th drader does. I think it's mean to give homework on Halloween and will be annoyed if they have any. One of my friends is a teacher and she said that if her kids(3rd grade) get homework, she will write a note asking that they be allowed to turn it in Thursday instead.

Last year I ranted because DD (then 9) skipped gymnastics to trick or treat (we let them know in advance). All the girls who skipped did double conditioning the next day-with weights! The youngest ones were in tears. I guess that was a warning and a threat. This year they actually announced in advance that the girls would get out an hour early.

As for homework, here is an idea that some of my kids' teachers have done that I just love:. At the beginning of the year, or semester, they give them a "homework pass" that they can use one time, to skip homework. (Things like projects and tests, of course, can't be skipped.) If you want to use it for Halloween, fine; if you want to use it on your birthday, fine. I think that's a great idea. :goodvibes

My DH thought DS wouldn't have homework, I said he will and sure enough he does. He is in lst. grade. There hasn't been a weekend even that he hasn't had homework. I agree it is one day -

My 2nd grader will have homework, but has PLENTY of time to complete it. Both girls have a dance class at 4pm too. I am letting them skip their 2nd class tonight (one has her second class at 5, the other at 6), but not the first one.

I assigned no homework tonight for any of my classes. We had a big project due yesterday. I told the kids if they got their project in on time there would be no homework on Halloween. Everyone got it in on time.

My night class was called off because it's Halloween(class vote and lots of moms kinda won)

I teach 3rd grade and I did give homework tonight. But the worksheet will take 20 minutes tops.

We find that the teachers without kids are the ones who will assign the homework.

Not true, here. No kids, no homework. Same with the teacher next door to me.

While it's not an official holiday...come on - give the kids a break! They so much look forward to Halloween. It takes time to get dressed up, go out trick-or-treating, greet other trick-or-treaters, get the costume off, etc. Why give them homework on tonight? Let them have one day off.

I agree. Missing homework for one night will not ruin a kid. The fun factor in school really seems to be lacking these days. I'm all for high standards, but kids need to have some fun too.

Well my older daughter ended up only having one math assignment. I couldn't complain about that. Granted, I still see no reason there couldn't have been no homework, but at least she kept it to a minimum.

The night before she had homework in six subjects. I was worried about a repeat of that!

Someone mentioned growing up going to a Catholic school and getting All Saints' Day off. I had forgotten all about that! My girls go to Catholic school, and that practice is long gone it seems.

Catholic schools here are closed tomorrow.

My niece and nephew had homework tonight. It was all done within 30 minutes. Most nights it takes over a hour to get all complete.
