This is pretty bad, but I cannot figure out what to do for my first graders homework. He needs to make a "Venn Diagram" to compare the stories of Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood. Basically he needs 8 things that are similar and opposite.
So far I have girl and forest for similarities, and bears & wolf for opposites. Anyone have any other ideas?

I swear I'm not trying to be a snot, but isn't the point for your 8YO to come up with similars and opposites? To be honest, I can't fathom an 8YO being able to do that, and if all the 8YO's turn up tomorrow with (parent-performed) perfect sheets, the teacher will think the lesson plan is attainable and appropriate, when really it might not be.

Then again, I guess you don't want your kid to be the only one whose parents left him on that limb. Oy.

Try this, have your DS tell you the stories and as he goes, make an outline with him. Do this on separate sheets of paper. Then, go over both outlines and see what is similar/different. When I was teaching JK, we did the "Threes" stories, ie, Three Bears, Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff and then discussed with the kids the simialrities and differences. You would be surprised at how well they can do this!

Little Red Riding Hood was taking "goodies" to grandma - Three Bears ate porage(sp?) - so both stories had food in the story.

Actually hes 6, almost 7. ;)
It isnt actual homework for a grade. Each month the principal sends home a "challenge" for the kids and this is it. Hes doing the set up, and writing, and he came up with the animal difference. Like you, I cant see these kids doing it. My main interest in him doing it is mostly to practice his writing, and to complete the assignment which he is given. I dont think helping him come up with ideas for this is too bad. I also dont think Im the first one who has ever asked for homework help on these boards.
BTW, I know you arent a snot. :D I do see your point though, and if this were regular homework, I would agree, but this is a more for fun type thing(thats not very fun ;) )

Houses are part of both stories; Who the houses belong to is different.

Family is part of both stories. (Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother and the bear family in Goldilocks.)

Both Goldilocks and Little Red Riding hood are traveling, aren't they?

Little Red Riding Hood is bringing things with her; Goldilocks is out in the woods empty-handed.

Colors are part of each of the girls' names.

Good ideas everyone. Ill see what he thinks of those ones.

Red Riding Hood was going to help Grandmother, she was an invited guest, Helping by taking something.

Goldilocks was a rather rude child going in a house not invited, eating their food, breakinking things, ect.

Both involved surprises at the end one was surprised by the bears, the other by the wolf.

Both main characters survived the surprises by the supposed bad guys by running away through the forest--bears and wolf.
I hope this helps. I teach 2nd grade, but each story has many variations.

Good luck and yell if you need more ideas.

Now ask a question about Disney and I might be able to help more. LOL

Both stories are fantasy (make-believe) and teach lessons, don't travel by yourself, use safety, and follow those safety rules!

Both are little girls! Would boys do That?

one difference is the 'intruder' in goldy locks is a girl, and the 'intruder' in red riding hood is a wolf, animal/human difference...goodluck.
