What is a thesis sentence?

Please don't laugh. 9th grade is the first year we utilize thesis sentences, and sadly I missed out on that. I won't see my tutor for another week or so. I caught the gist of it, it's like a topic sentence. However, I'm not to sure and I don't want to guess. If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it.

K i'll try to explain to the best of my abilities....


so your thesis is basically summing up what you are going to talk about in your essay.

in high school we were told do structure our thesis' like this:

In_____ there was _____ which is shown by ____, ____ and ____.
(EX: In To Kill A Mockingbird there are many examples of discrimination, for example Rasicm against Tom Robinson, Scout being ridiculed for being a tomboy and Boo Radley being considered an outcast for being different.)


that is a TERRIBLE exmaple...I just made it up on the spot (and I haven't read the book for years...just tried to pick one that alot of people would know)

Anyways, that's the best ay I can describe the type of thesis statement you'll be required to use in HS.

Like said above, its basically a sentence that sums up what you are going to say in your essay.

Yup it just describes what your essay is going to be about and usually gives three examples. That's the format I followed in High school (so weird to say that now that I'm graduating)
