My DS is in 6th grade. His homework is corrected and graded (by another student - they switch papers with who is sitting next to them). Then they read off their grades to the teacher. Their homework grades count as 75%:earseek: and their test grades count as 25% of their final grade. DS brought home a printout of his grades so far this marking period. I went through his math workbook and found that some of the problems that were marked wrong were in fact correct. He needs every point that he can get;) . I feel that if these grades are counting for such a large part of his final grade, that the teacher should be the one correcting and grading these papers.

What ever happened to the day when homework was to reinforce what was taughted that day in class and so that the teacher could see what the students understood and what they needed a little help in?

I agree with you. I would definitely call the teacher and calmly discuss the matter with her/him.

In 4th grade this was happening to my son - another student would deduct points if he thought the handwriting was messy, etc. The teacher discontinued the policy after several parents discussed this with her.

I would mention it to the teacher. We use to trade papers (many moons ago) in class. However, the teacher would then collect the homework and check them herself.

Definitely discuss your concerns with the teacher. It is his/her responsibility to check over the problems. 75% is an awful big percentage to put into the hands of 6th graders.

As a teacher, I have a prob with hw being 75% of the grade. IMHO HW is the time to practice and make mistakes. This is where you learn from your mistakes. By the time that test time comes around, everything should be ironed out. In my class I check HW for completion and we go over it in class. The only thing that we exchange papers in class with other students are Spelling Pre-tests. If there are problems, the students come to me and I fix it. I regrade all 100%.

when I was in school I never did homework, I figured if the teacher couldnt teach me in 8 hours why should I be penalized

::yes:: That's what I always though homework was all about.

I wouldn't like the other students grading each other's papers. What if one student is jealous of another student for whatever reason and grades that student's papers?

I would also think there's a privacy issue involved. I don't believe teachers can post grades, why is it the students can know their fellow student's grades by grading each other's papers?
