DD is in online charter school and this assignment she asked me to explain I am at a loss. It is a portfolio drop experiment;

Heredity=About alles and using a Punnett square, there are two rabbits represented by white and red beans. Red are black and white are bown haired rabbits.

50 white and 50 red beans to each rabbit coat. Make a chart with 100 combo results????
She understood the square to two parents and 4 sq of results, not the 100?
like BB Bb mother and father......

Also short of buying the 100 red and white beans is there a computation formula she could use then record the results.

She needs the thesis, well worded to project the results.....
She is in 7th grade, and this is out of my ball park, I can read it, but once you show me the math part, I shiver?

Even if we get the beans, creating the chart is confusing for the correct recording of results. Just keep picking out two beans one from each bag???
But then the chart?????
Any thoughts?

The 100 combinations means, I believe, that they are wanting you to pull beans 100 times. (you could just flip a quarter heads=red, tails=white if you don't want to get the beans). To project the number of combinations of each you would use the Hardy-Weinberg equation a^2+2ab+b^2=1, where a is the fraction of red beans and b is the fraction of white beans. a^2 would give you the fraction of the 100 that produced red/red combos, 2ab would give you the fraction of red/white combos, and b^2 would give you the fraction of white/white combos. This equation can be used to check your results/in the explanation, but the experiment would still need to be performed (either with beans/coin flips) so she could show her data in the report. Hope this helps!

Hi Princess, thanks for the input. I never thought of the quater toss, that will work..
The only chart I could think of was to use spread sheet. Will it be BB at the top of colum 1 for Black and the bb (or Bb)for second colum for brown hair rabbit and then the rows are numbered 1-100.

The math plan to recheck results is all Greek to me, perhaps dd understands how to check results.

She throws the coin up 1 time Rabbit 1 and again Rabbit 2,
Gosh isn;t this a 50/50?

The chart you're describing would work, but a chart with 3 colums BB, Bb and bb where you would record tally marks based on what you drew would probably be simpler. BB and Bb would result in one color of rabbit (the one that is called the dominant phenotype). bb would result in the other color (the recessive phenotype). And no it won't be a 50/50 ration. 25% should be BB, 25% should be bb and 50% would be Bb. Toss the coin once to see which allele mom gives and again to see what dad would give, and then record it in the table.

I can't imagine doing this in 7th grade! I'm impressed! If you need anymore help let me know...genetics/biology in general is something I love.

Oh what a help you have been! Yes I can't believe this is seventh grade. I can see reading about Mendal, but to do a lab and thesis ERGH.

I guess I am just making sure Black is BB and Brown is bb not Bb.

At least I can print this up and tomorrow she should be able to understand better. I am so mathphobic. I remember doing the intergers and things in a college science and freaking from math phobia, lol.
I really envy you and your talent! :cheer2:

Wouldn't it be more accurate to toss two coins? That should give her the correct probability.

Does she have access to a professor online who could help her if she gets stuck?

Humm never thought about the two coins? Still trying to figure out how you remove the beans..I do have 50 beans in a bag, white and red from a Planter that has roses hot glued to pens....

This is winter break and she is catching up on a lab she had to do so no teachers available until Jan.

We are going to sit with the excel chart and the beans we have in each zip lock.
This teacher is a real stickler, especially what the hypothosis is and supported.
