*** Homeschool List ***

Ashton's labs were not that high even at diagnosis(dx). Maybe a couple times with fever, but at dx, her WBC was about 10,000. Is there a name for it?? l
Is there a reason to worry about her having leukemia other than her high white count? Obviously, if she has had this for 4 years, it's just some benign thing that she has. Do they check her regularly b/c of this?
Ashton's ANC was low, her RBC, hemoglobin and platelets were low. She has had 7 transfusions over the course a couple months when she first started chemo. This is on the low end considering all the chemo kids we knew. Some had them daily.
Has she been a well child? Meaning, since they are high, does she fight off illnesses easier? That COULD be a perk as long as nothing is wrong with her otherwise.
Thank you for the well wishes and YES God has blessed us and thank you for the future blessing!
I will keep yours in my prayers.

Lori

Hi Lori,

Actually Beka has not been a healthy child. When she is ill, generally her white cells are "normal" but when she's healthy, they are not. We've chased all kinds of trails trying to figure it out. She has severe lung damage from having RSV as a baby and not being treated properly by our old pediatrician. She is tiny for her age and in fact, she's been tested for Cystic Fibrosis twice.

We continue to get her white cells tested every year - for a while there we spent a LOT of time at the hospital every couple weeks. Obviously we didn't go through near what you did but it's been rough at times. We had to drive 1 1/2 hours today to see her pulmonologist today. She's been hooked to her nebulizer this summer due to the severe forest fires here in MT.

Please continue to keep me posted on Ashton. We will pray for her as a family.

Another Homeschooler here. We just started this past week. I have two girls, ages 12 and almost 4. We are in Kindergarten/1st and my older one is 7/8. I find it hard to give them a grade level because they are on different levels in different subjects. My almost 4 yo started reading a few weeks back and can read some 1st grade books. My 12 yo is doing 8th grade math and her reading is at least 11th grade level. So, homeschooling is the perfect fit for us.

Glad I found this post!

Hi all. I'm new to the board and thrilled to find it! I have 3 children ages 5, 4, and 9 months and have really toyed with the notion of homeschooling all of them full-time. My five-year-old was successfully homeschooled the year before she entered K and 1/2 days during the year she was in K (went to the public school for the AM and then homeschooled PM). She was the youngest in her class and ahead of all of them academically. In fact, I think she was pretty bored during the AM at public school. Our current family situation doesn't allow me to homeschool her full-time this year, so she will be attending public school (full days) for first grade. Once things settled down a bit for our family, I will probably go back to homeschooling her and her 2 brothers full time.

I'm so glad to find this board for help/resources! Homeschooling is very big in my area (central Illinois), so I wouldn't say it's just a 'southern' thing!:) :)

Looking forward to reading more of your posts!

Welcome both of ya'll!:dance3:

I was wondering how many of us have kids that post on the DIS? Are your kids in love with Disney as much as you are? I know my DDs would love to be able to "talk " to other homeschooling, Disney loving kids. DD11 has been allowed to post on the VMK boards for awhile now with no problems. Any ideas on how to connect them? Would any of them be interested?

I suppose if they had an account of their own and started a homeschool kids thread much like this one it would work. I'm sure the mods could tell us if its possible. My DD11 would love that.

What do ya'll think of a 7 1/2 year old on a board? If you say 'yep' count us in. DD would love it!:3dglasses

Hi, Shannon, I am just getting to reading about Beka. I am sorry she has had so many problems. No matter what the illness or issue is, when it comes to our kids being sick, none is good or fair, right?! My younger one had RSV and testing for CF before-but not 2x-that must have been taxing on you. And I am sure not to the extent you seem to have done with Beka. She had RSV at 6 weeks old and we were at Children's for it. Then she was tiny for her age and wasn't gainng wait, had respiratory issue then gave her the sweat test. THAT was a nerve wracking test to wait for results of. I had visions of these kids we saw in wheel chairs with breathing equipment and my heart just broke for them. After NEGATIVE results, we moved on and I never dreamed we'd be back at Children's a year later with the older one battling leukemia. We "lived" there, but not as much as some others. (There s always someone worse off right?? But how awful when that is a child, you really feel everything and stop thinking like that. It is not right to see kids suffer like that, fighting for thier lives.) I often said to my DH that the experience felt like someone ripped open my chest and poured salt and lemon juice in there and it wouldn't heal. (If you listen to Creed, our motto was thier song, "Rusted and Weathered"!!!) BUT I knew God was along for the ride, pulling us thru DAILY. He gave me the light I needed, even if for a moment, each day I asked. I begged God for her healing, and though I don't think He gave her healing because of me begging! Everyone has a purpose and she just hasn't finished fufilling hers yet(Thank you LORD!!!) to my family's benefit!:dance3:

I don't feel thankful for leukemia like some other parents I know who have said that they are thankful for it b/c thier lives are all the better and closer(years later mind you, after a good long survival). BUT I am thankful that I have experienced a bigger view, had lots of faith conflict that made me ask LOTS of questions, gotten closer to my God through knowing Jesus better(we've had LOTS of words, me and Him!), AND realized what TRUE love is- People we knew and didn't know came to help, or offer prayers or whatever they could! Love was poured on us and we needed it and did not ask for it. THANKFUL for those angels:angel: !! I feel my and DH faith journey was on fast forward, and if you ever want to meet a child of complete Christian faith-Ashton has such a wonderful view of Jesus, and of life. Most kids who have a battle to win, usually do have a better view and lots of empathy!

Sorry for ramblin-this is usually what I do on her caringbridge site!

In our prayers, glad you told me her name!

Lori,

I am sitting her with tears fallling down my cheeks.... I agree with you so much. My family has been tested in so many ways. Sometimes I feel like Job; the closer and more sure I am, the more gets thrown our way..... but, in it all I can see Him and feel His love.

It was inspiring to hear your story.... it's great to "meet" a fellow Christian here.... Thank you for sharing, and if you ever want you can send me an email and if you have any specific prayer requests, I'ld be happy to pray right along with you.....

Wondering, is there another Homeschool board here at DIS? If so can someone post the link to it?

I am planning to spend 2 days with MK in the middle at Epcot. A HS friend of mine has gone to the library and chosen books about the countries in Epcot as part of their pre-trip curric as they won't start till they come back around Sept 10th....

A group of local homeschoolers here in Louisville are going during homeschool week I do believe... my DH vacation didn't renew until after Sept 7th and we have a wedding he is in on 9/15 so we aren't going until later, see my siggy. :)

We would like you to stick around!

We would love info on how different HS'ers have used EPCOT for education, I sure have. I have used allears.net and the mouseforless.com for printables with facts about different coutries in EPCOT. What do you do? I definitely could stand to use a day in WDW as a feild trip day of school!!

Hi, Creekermom! We're in the same homeschool group in Louisville that you are. Good to see another hometown person loves the Dis like we do! I tried to search for info on the ultimate homeschool field trip to Disney, but I couldn't find it. Do you remember what it was called exactly?

I think the homeschool week is actually the first 3 weeks of September, but I can't remember exactly. It covers 3 weeks to allow more people to attend during that time.

Hmmmm....I'll try to keep looking for the exact info. They have it every year and it includes people in several states, I believe.

I am interested in homeschooling my dd9 and ds7.
What would the advantages/disadvantages of cyberschool vs. traditional homeschooling be?
I live in Pennsylvania I have heard that the state has a decent cyber program.
Any help would be great!

There is a yahoo group for homeschooling DISsers and their children. It is set to the second highest level of group security that yahoo offers. It is by invite only and not listed in any directory. I am the owner and have to approve all members. Please PM me with you yahoo ID or email so I can send an invite. My yahoo ID is baby_dreaming73.

I think all ages should be allowed, it's a fantastic way to improve typing skills, sentence construction and make a few friends. Depending on the number and ages of the kids involved, we could have geography lessons, a book discussion, even a few trivia type threads like here on DIS (Think the movie quote thread with an educational twist, like what year did Columbus make his first trans-atlantic journey? TNP would answer 1492 and would post their own question.)

Lisa, I wasn't sure how many weeks of Sept are Homeschooling weeks, I actually thought it was only the one that the BIG trip that Louisville HS families are taking. WEll that is good to know.

ARe you going this year?
if so when?

So good to 'see' another HS family from HFHG :)

Do you do co-op?

I am 2 locations... crazy I know... I am teaching at Fairdale and Alliance(Bucheul)

Ladies, I have been quite busy the last 2 wks. Our co-op started last week and as you can see in my post, I am teaching at 2 locations.. that with working on weekends, overnight..., church on Weds that also started back up last week and any other obligations.. have take my time lately.

I do miss you all. :)

PS: DD who is almost 5 has been taking off a ring from her paper chain countdown and yesterday, she came to me and said, I was crying and I asked why? She replied " It was a good cry, I am just so excited about going to Disney & I can't believe I am going!"

How sweet!

Don't you love to see how excited they get about going to Disney World!

We don't go to co-op this year, but are looking at some of the options (including co-op) for labs for biology next year and maybe a few other courses, depends on which direction Stuart goes.

Working at both of the co-ops must be very hectic, I know they are on different ends of town and the travel time alone must be crazy. Good luck with all of it!

HI,

I'm new to your homeschool list. I have a 5 year old that didn't work out in Kindergarten a week ago. He had extreme separation anxiety to the hilt. So I decided to let him stay home and work with him at home for a while.

My questions --- for kindergarten's -- what are your favorites websites for them. I know about Starfall and LOVE IT for him. Anything else like Starfall?

Thank you.
