Homeowners Association Rules

But all that just sounds like stuff the town does for free...I guess I just don't get why people would need to pay others for rules and events and things that the town puts on for free around here....we also have free concerts twice a week in the summer, free movies on the town hall lawn, "drive in" type movies they play at the local beach, Easter egg hunts, Christmas events with Santa, tree lighings, santa coming around in the fire truck giving out candy etc, Memroiral Day, Columbus Day and 4th of July parades..all stuff the town does...enforcing town codes, all included in your property taxes around here...just standard stuff. Don't all your towns have codes they will enforce, like no trash building up, no junk cars, boats etc???
Boy would I be in trouble with that stupid trash can rule! There are night I work overtime and leave at 7am and don't get home till after 10...guess all my overtime would be going to pay a silly fine. Actually in reality that wouldn't really work since Sunday night garbage goes out, Monday night papers and cans and bottle go out, Tuesday night Yard waste goes out, and Thursyda night its garbage night again so almost every day there is some type of pickup where you would have your pails out. And that parking at a grocery store wouldn't work either..if they ever heard of you parkin there for something like that they would have every car towed since you can't park there unless you are shopping there LOL. And exactly who gets all this money they fine you....it probably ends up in the pockets of the "board" for their "time and effort"

Our town doesn't do any of the things that your town does...we don't even have a library!! For us, the HOA "picks up" the gaps. I really do like our HOA here.

And yes, the HOA in AZ was awful. However, the nearest grocery (a Fry's/Kroger) was a part of the "planned community", and in order to get a permit to build there, had to agree to party guests parking in their parking lot. Of course, NO ONE ever did it...people just paid the "party fee". It really was insane!!

I guess that is why it is great to have some HOA communities, and some not....different strokes!!

our town does beer blasts with tribute bands  ...our HOA brings in the symphony with awesome fireworks. Founder's Day is as good as anything the town puts on. We have an a great summer rec program for the kids - nice to have it onsite and affordable. We have holiday parties for the kids (not done in community) and a tree lighting ceremony at Xmas. We can get everywhere on extensive walking trails - many through gorgeous wooded areas....they are maintained in the winter, along with the cross country ski trails. I could go on and on. Sure the community provides some of these ..but it much nicer having them right outside your door. For what we get, our payments are reasonable (shhh, don't tell them or they will increase it).

After reading some of the replies here, I have a new appreciation for just how reasonable our HOA is with the restrictions and enforcement!!!!

Wow! Some of you have some real nasty HOA's. Ours is pretty lax. There are rules but unless something is so unsightly they let stuff slide. Noone has ever been fined. Yes, a few people have gotten phone calls. One for parking on the front lawn. We do have to keep our garbage cans out of street site but we are not told when we can put it out or take it in. If someones trash can sits out at the street for a few days because they were away they are not fined. Now if the can were to sit there for a month they would get a phone call and just told to bring the can in.

Having to clean oil spots off the driveway??!!!! Yikes. That is a bit out of control. And the one about the guy who hurt his back so he couldn't finish the project and the brick layed there so they got fined. That is sad. Our Hoa would not be like that. In fact we had one family in the neighborhood who couldn't pay their dues because they were having financial issues. So they were allowed more time to get back on their feet and then they paid their back dues they owed.

No, not all towns have those activites. And no, not all towns have the same enforcement rules.

Our town says there is NOTHING wrong with overnight parking in the street. So everyone on my street parks in the street. I dont understand why since we all have driveways. But both sides will park on the street. So it is almost impossible to get a car down the street. The town has no law against it (even though it would be very dangerous in an emergency situation), so it si fine. My town also has no laws against boats, RVs, Tractor Trailers, or Commercial Vehicles parking in the neighborhood. So my street is full of them.

I cant wait to move into the new neighborhood with the strict HOA!

Our HOA won't allow any signs in the yard, at all...even when the house is for sale!

It's tough for us right now because ours is!
