Wheee, my first post on this board! :)

My son's pin collection has outgrown his very small pin bag from several years ago, and the big bags are so expensive. I read somewhere else about making a pin binder, using something like a 3-4" binder and different colors of plastic cross stitch canvas to attach the pins to, and maybe sheets of felt or something in between to protect the pins.

I'd really like to surprise my son with something like this for his birthday next month. Has anyone ever made something like this, and do you have any tips or suggestions??

Thanks!! :flower3:

I made one, but don't really have any suggestions... they really are that easy to make! I didn't use cross stitch canvas - just heavy duty, stiff backed felt. Looking back, I probably would have done as you're thinking and used both... the canvas for the pins and the felt as a sheet protector. I also used one of the binders with the cloth covers that zips shut so it would end up more like a folio rather than just a paper binder.

I guess the one suggestion I do have is to use a 3 hole punch for the sheets that will go into the binder rather than a one hole punch that you have to line up. That way the pages will fit exactly and you won't be trying to "make" them fit if one of your holes is a bit off.

Good luck!

I don't have a way to make a binder, but an alternative to buying a bag.

My DD and I are just getting into pin trading. Last weekend we went to meet some traders at Disneyland. A lot of them were using baseball cards binders with the sheets that go with them. These worked out nicely to fit both the card and the pin together. I seem to remember that the card holder sheets were enough to protect the pins. I bought one in Target this week. It cost me around $15 and it came with the card sheet holders. Just a thought.

Come to think of it, if you really want to make him a binder, I would use the baseball binders anyway. These binders have a large "D" rings and could hold a lot of pages and felt protectors.

I hope this didn't get to you late. If you made, would it be possible for you post how made your son's binder?

Another alternative: We took the pins off the cards, placed them in shadow box that is lined with Disney material )or a fun coordinated room color). The pins literally "push" right in and can be enjoyed daily rather than when you open a binder!
You can set them by theme or just random!
I have several, walmart sells various sizes of shadow boxes and they are not expensive. Michaels (?) AC moor also, they both have coupons.
Good Luck, hope you';ll let us know how/what you did! And Happy Birthday to your child!

I really like this idea. :thumbsup2
