Homemade haircuts

Yikes...my dh wants me to cut his hair, as he's tired of going every few weeks for a cut. Granted, I've cut my own in the past, but my hair's longer, and that was easy. I've also cut the girls' hair from time to time, but that's just straight across.

Any tips are greatly appreciated! We have a wedding to go to this weekend, and I'm afraid that my dh is going to look like he has ringworm

I'd love to hear from people who give home haircuts!

I've been cutting DH's hair for 13+ years now (ever since we got married) and DS's since he needed his first haircut (he's now 10). I had the advantage that my mom was trained as a beautician back in the 60s and could give some pointers. Get Wahl brand hair clipper set at the store....they're great, cheap, and what the pros use. I still use the original ones I first bought....they've held up wonderfully. Some sets even come with an instructional video....or you might even find something on the web. My main warning would be to NOT cut his hair for the first time before something like a wedding or pictures or such! First time I ever cut DH's....it ended up way short! Luckily hair grows. My only thing I tell DH is that if he wants me to do his hair....I'm not a pro, don't claim to be one, so don't ever expect pro results.....no one has yet to comment that he has home-cut hair. Using the Wahl system is pretty straight-forward.

I agree with the previous poster. The Wahl clippers are pretty easy to use and have attachments you put on to get the desired length. Once you figure out which length to cut each section of hair, you'll be all set. It is so easy, my husband cuts his own when he wants it trimmed and I just trim along the back of his neck.

Agree with PP who said that right before the wedding isn't the time to start,lol.

We also use the Wahl clippers. You can get a longer attachment (the ones with the kit are pretty short) at Sally's Beauty Supply or the like. It does take some practice, but if he's happy with a basic cut, it's definately doable.

I've cut my husband's hair for awhile now. I also use the Wahl cutters. I went to the beauty supply store by our house and bought one of those cape things for him to wear when I cut it. Makes clean up so much easier. We cut his hair about every two weeks. I have messed up a few times (one time I used the wrong guide on top and it was REALLY short) but overall I can do it pretty well and pretty quickly now. You'll get the hang of it over time. If your husband's haircut is easy (like mine) it shouldn't be a problem. I would recommend waiting until after the wedding though like everyone else suggested.

I agree that you should get a set of clippers and learn how to cut it...I just think that maybe after the wedding would be a good time to start.
I learned how to cut my husband's after he received a terrible cut...the day of a fancy, military dinner that we had to attend!
I believe his words were..."Go and buy a set of clippers because you couldn't possibly do worse than this!"

The first time I cut it, I went very slowly (remember you can take more off, but you can't reattach it!) while my husband held a small mirror. He kind of directed me and we went from there. Over the years, I've learned to adapt from a military-style haircut to a more professional look...I also cut DS15 hair and there's never a complaint...

Give it a try...but start AFTER the wedding!

When we first bought our house, my DH was so nervous about $$, he came home with a pair of clippers and announced I was going to be his new barber. Well after one haircut-my DH pays a barber to cut his hair

I am sure the OP will have better luck at it them me, but I definitely would not do it before a wedding either.

I do wonder if I had seen it done once if I could have done a better job? Sometimes that's all it takes. Maybe make this (pre-wedding) haircut his last professional one, but go and watch what the barber does and then you'll be able to copy it.

I only cut my bangs between trips to Great Clips for my real cuts, but I've got two pieces of advice....

1)Sharp shears, the sharper the better.
2)Take off less than you think. I don't know why but if I take off what I think is right, it's too short. If I take off less, it comes out just right.

I take a barstool outside and cut my kids hair out there. I picked up a cape at Sally's and use that also. No cleanup!!!

I have a DH and 3 boys. I cut all of their hair.

I have done it for 4 years now and I was adding up that I have probably saved over $1500 so far!

I have Wahl clippers too.

I have also cut my own hair. I get it really wet and then lean over the end of the sofa and cut a strait line. I have very wavy hair and it makes a very nice long layered look.
