Here's the deal. DW and I are close to buying a DVC membership. The problem is I want to go AKV for the incentives. She wants to buy a resale of VWL because she wants that as our home resort. I told her that the home resort really wouldn't matter as reservations for VWL should be available 7 months out. We'll probably travel to WDW for a week in June once we're up and running. I need help convincing her that because we buy AKV doesn't mean that's the only place we can stay. Who's right? Thanks for the help and comments.

I'd say she's right, unless you really aren't able to plan more than 7 months out. VWL is small and rooms go more quickly there. I wouldn't count on being able to book a VWL room at 7 months out -- sometimes yes, sometimes no. We were able to get 2 nights at VWL at about 2 months out during mid-June, but only the weekend (= more expensive, more points) was available. When I first tried at 4 months, nothing was available.

The best advice is to buy where you want to stay the most, unless you never plan more than 7 months in advance. Then, it doesn't really matter, but you will have to be willing to take what's available.

No way can you count on always getting something at VWL at 7 months out. It's one of the smallest DVC resorts, and the proximity to MK makes it very popular.

That said, June is not one of the really busy times for DVC, so you'd have a better chance then that you would Oct-Dec.

Something else important to remember.....you're competing with the entire membership of DVC for those 7 month reservations. DVC is growing. A lot. There will be an ever larger pool of members, competing for those smaller resorts at 7 months. When SSR went on sale, that huge influx of owners made a noticeable difference in availability at the other resorts. It's tougher to get 7 month bookings now than it used to be.

Incentives are nice, but it's important to think long-term with DVC. Spending all that money, and having a tough time getting the resort I want...not much value in that.

Tough call I guess. I also like the idea of the longer membership but the reality is that I won't be using it at the end.

Any other opinions?

If your DW wants to stay at VWL most of the time, are the incentives really worth it? Think about it -are they worth the "looks" and the "I told you so's" and an unhappy wife if you end up at AKV or another resort instead of VWL?

You might get June reservations most of the time if you call right at 7 months, but what if you change your preferred travel time and can't get it at VWL? You wouldn't be the first members to change travel patterns during the course of your membership.

Who will be making the reservations and planning the trips and dealing with waitlists, etc. If it's not going to be you, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY think about it, LOL.

At our house, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy". :teeth:

Good luck!

You're wrong about availability. If VWL is where you want to stay, VWL is where you should buy. The more DVC members there are - the tougher it is becoming to get reservations at non-home resorts, especially at DVC busy times (which don't coincide necessarily with typically busy WDW times).

Be cautioned that DVC guides have been known to represent home resort as "not mattering because you can stay wherever you want by booking at 7 months," but remember that they are sales people and they are trying to sell THEIR inventory vs. letting you buy resale.

If you read this board long enough you'll see the message over and over. Buy where you want to stay or you'll be disappointed in the long run.

We bought a couple weeks ago, so had the same options and dilemma as you.

AK looks awesome and is brand new. It is far from everything expect AK park and Blizzard Beach. You cannot walk or take a boat; everything requires a bus or your car. I expect it to be very crowded because of being new and have lots of kids because of the water play area. The animals are a cool plus, but we can drop in for a meal and walk the grounds. Points are on the low end if you get the value rooms, but they are smaller and go quickly. Part of your fees cover food and care of the animals, so dues could rise significantly. There is also talk that the animals could be removed at any time.

We considered buying OKW. It is the cheapest buy in rate and very low annual fees. We could almost buy 200 points there for 150 elsewhere. Very tempting!! It is a beautiful resort and I plan to stay there sometime, but I would be disappointed if as my home resort I was "stuck" there often because I could not get in elsewhere at the 7 month mark. The same goes for SSR. Kinda like "It's nice to visit, but I don't wanna live there".

We love the Boardwalk, so could easily justify spending a little over $1000 more and higher annual dues to be fairly assured we could get there at the 11 month time.

If your wife loves Wilderness, you should buy there. For all you're spending, spend just a little more to get what you really want.

I completely agree with this, and I also think it is great you are asking this question. It is better to learn some of the reality of DVC from actual members before making that big purchase.

We are awaiting ROFR on a 150-point BWV contract. I always look at the following year's vacation, and prefer booking very early. 11 months out is typical for us to book our vacations. We want the close proximity to Epcot and DHS, the activities of the Boardwalk, and the dining options at BC/YC as well all within walking distance. I want to be able to see IllumiNations or Fantasmic and then walk back to my room. For us it was between BWV and BCV but we went with BWV because of the entertainment on the BW, we could walk to DHS and Epcot (although BCV is closer to Epcot), and it is fewer points to stay there in a standard room vs. any room at BCV which is the same points as a preferred or BW view room at BWV. I felt realistically that since all of these things pointed in the direction of BWV being right for us, that is was necessary for us to buy a contract there. We have never stayed in that area but we took a walk there from the Int'l Gateway and we loved it. We vowed to stay in that area whenever we go to Disney, and when I found out that it is a few thousands of dollars for a 10-night stay, we decided to look into DVC!

One major thing I learned from these boards is to buy your membership at a home resort you would like to stay in EVERY time you go to WDW. We have all intentions of always staying at BWV. Actually, I know that is the only place we will stay whenever we go! I know the incentives at AKV are tempting, and DH and I talked about it for literally 5 minutes! We decided it is not for us because we don't even know when we will get to Animal Kingdom Park again, for one. Our kids are little and unless they really want to go there when they are older (i.e., for the more adult rides that they are too little for now), we will not be going there for a really long time. We liked it, but were not impressed with it. We are from NYC and go to the Bronx Zoo all the time, and I know AK is much bigger and has more different things, but I think that also took away from it for us. Many of my relatives and friends also say the same thing. Also, we are not crazy about the dining choices at AKV/AKL. We ate at Boma last month, and although it was very good and very different, DH and I have sensitive stomachs and we had terrible heartburn that night. So we won't be going there again. Jiko is the other TS choice, which is also African themed so I would imagine they use the same types of spices as Boma, or similar. It's just very out of the way for Epcot, DHS and MK, our 3 favorite places at WDW. So, although it is for many people and people rave about it, it's just not for us. SO we went with a BWV resale and now are hoping to pass ROFR!!

Okay, I'll stop writing my book now! :rotfl2:

If I have learned nothing else on these boards I have learned this:

BUY.WHERE.YOU.WANT.TO.STAY!

While you will see it written here and on other DVC boards that you should, "Buy where you want to stay." that is not always the best policy in my opinion. If you can now, and believe that you will be able to in the future, plan your vacations more than 7 months in advance then this is excellent advice. If you do not think advanced plannings is going to be the case for most of your trips, this is lousy advice.

I know that "bangzoom6877" is a planner (she isn't even a member yet and already has her first trip planned ... for 2010!), and she talks about how her family will always stay at BWV. Well, just because she buys into BWV does not in any way guarantee that. Only advanced planning of every trip will guarantee that booking advantage. If "bangzoom6877" decides to take a trip with only 6 months planning (which would be advanced by many people's standards!), she may find that BWV is sold out for her dates and that (heaven forbid!) an SSR owner has managed to take her precious BWV villa.

I know that sounds like I'm picking on "bangzoom6877," but the principle is important. If you cannot or do not plan more than 7 months out, buying at a more expensive resort (original cost including promotions and/or closing costs AND maintenance fees should be considered!) is not smart. And just because you are a BWV (or any other resort) owner does not grant you any preferencial treatment after the 7 month booking window. So why pay the higher start price, get no promotional benefits, and pay higher annual fees for a limited preference that you will not use???

Bottom line: if you plan, buy where you want to stay; if you do not plan, buy where it is cheapest!

I completely agree with the previous posts. We have stayed at OKW twice and I absolutely LOVE it there. Now, we decided to buy into DVC....but not at OKW. This was my reasoning: Our kids are almost 3 and 5 so we have a lot of years left to vacation. My oldest DD loves everything about animals. She adores going to the zoo and telling other people about the critters. With the kids as young as they are right now, I think that AKV is a much better choice for our home resort. If we got "stuck" there for the next 10-15 years, oh well. There are worse places to be...like Michigan in January!:rotfl: Also, since OKW is bigger (and less popular) than the other DVC resorts, I presume that we may be able to get in with only the 7 month window. If we are going to go during a peak time, or if we're short on points and need the value category, then we have the 11-month window at AKV.

We may contemplate an add-on at OKW sometime down the road. Right now, we only plan on vacationing every other year so we really don't need the points. Our little 100 point contract (currently awaiting ROFR:surfweb: ) is a perfect fit.

If you would not be happy (more importantly, if SHE would not be happy) if you HAD to stay at AKV, then you shouldn't own there. I think your decision is complicated by the fact that you are trying to choose between a very small resort and one that will eventually be a very large resort. If I were you, I would buy at VWL since you'll have a better chance of booking AKV at 7 months, if you chose to stay there...unless you MUST have concierge or value accommodations...then you have a VERY tough choice to make!:headache:

Good luck with your decision!:cheer2:

If you ever want to stay at VWL for the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays, you will need to own there. If you will ever need a Grand Villa, you really need to have a home resort with GVs. If you want that BW view at the BWV, you will need to own at BWV. If you want the AKV Concierge, you will need to own there.

Sure there will be members who tell you they got all of these at 7 months out or less, but they are the exception to the rule.

As more and more members make there reservations at eleven months out, you need to buy where you won't mind staying if you can't change at seven months out.
