...Just saw this on the Dizpins site, and new everyone here would want to know about it. I SURE hope they don't decide to do anything like this at WDW. Sure, it'd cut down on the sharks, but isn't this just a bit much ?

Tokyo Disneyland Park has established the following pin-trading guidelines, effective Monday July 16, 2001. These guidelines are in keeping with the philosophy of "Family Entertainment" and are intended to ensure that guests of all ages can have an enjoyable stay at the Park.
Please remember to use a pin lanyard when trading pins!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Pins may be traded only when they are attached to a pin lanyard. A pin lanyard is a neck strap for pin trading. They are available at shops in Tokyo Disneyland. You may also use other types of neck straps.

You will not be able to use collection books, boards, cases or other tools for trading or displaying pins.

When trading, you will not be able to occupy park tables, counters, benches, passageways, floor space or the ground.

Monies or gifts should not be exchanged or used in trades for a pin.

Guests who do not comply with these pin-trading guidelines may be requested to leave the Park.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Please note that these guidelines are also in effect at all other Tokyo Disney Resort locations.

Call me a radical, but I kind of like most of the guidelines.

They do not make the hobby inacessible to some, having all guests enjoy the trading on an equal basis.
In other words, they prevent some from overpowering the hobby.
Something is lost when the frenzy takes over.

I hate it when someone with a more humble collection feels inadequate because he/she can't afford the splurge!

I'd rather feel like I am participating in a friendly exchange of a hobby we both love rather than a marketing race to the finish line.

Not to worry though... In America, I feel Di$ney may di$agree with enforcing $uch guideline$ anyway.

WVREVY, thanks for sharing this information with us. I would not like the guideline about having to attach pins to a lanyard or neck strap. I don't use one. I just carry my pins in a small plastic Disney bag. How I carry my pins should not be anyone's business or concern, but mine. I don't expect to be going to Japan, so it is sort of a moot point.

I kind of like it too, for the same reasons as Wanda.

I don't see anything that would prevent a person from carrying some extra pins in a bag, or extra lanyards in a backpack and excusing yourself for the moment to take those pins and put them to your lanyard, if a situation arose where someone wanted to see more variety.

As a person with only modest trader stock, I think a lanyard only rule would make me more likely to approach another guest.

I think the part about using park property is completely contrary to the current situation at WDW. Disney has provided tables (and chairs, in some places) for trading.

Also, I think a lot of people don't use lanyards. I've seen many people with hats. Since I bought one of those little tiny pinbags (the one from McDonald's with the coke symbol, it's almost wallet-sized), we often carry that in the park with just a few traders. I've seen many people with that size bag.

I'm thinking that this TDL announcement must have been generated by some specific unpleasant events.

Can anyone shed some light on this, perhaps?

Just my observation:
Earlier this year TDL pins were extra nice because
1) generally they are very nice pins (just IMHO)
2) they were running cheaper on the auctions/elsewhere (more resonably priced)
I liked them and thought I was getting more bang for my buck, at that time.
Now it seems the prices have risen on the TDL pins on auctions/other sources. Some auction sellers are asking ridiculous prices for the TDL pins (at least from what little you can gather from the descriptions/photos).
Anyone else think so too?

That's funny when a rack pin costing 600 Yen is equivalent to roughly $4.77 in American dollars...even some fancy pin costing 1200 Yen is only $9.54 in American dollars...I wouldn't pay more than $6 for any Tokyo rack pin. It's not worth it.

Couple things:

1) It may make it easier for someone with a meager collection to approach another trader (and let's face it, we were ALL there once...even if it IS hard to remember those days when we're buried in LBE's :) :) ), but I think overall it will DIScourage trading in the parks. Sure, I could put nothing but my absolute best traders on a lanyard, but that's not exactly an easy way to make trades, either.

2) Wanda et al...You should NEVER feel intimidated to approach another traderjust because they have a metric ton of pins. One of the nicest traders we've met (Hi, Larry !) at WDW was one of those suitcase types, but boy am I glad we approached him with our, at the time, meager collection. Now, as one of those pin bag carrying types myself, it's a LOT of fun talking to people about the pins in the collection, even if we don't trade. Plus, it has actually led to a few trades that would never have happened if they hadn't approached me just 'cause I happen to have a pin bag.

3) Hopemax...Nope, you can't pull that bag out ANYWHERE in the parks, according to those guidelines. I guess there's nothing in the rules that says you can only wear ONE lanyard, though, so there could be a few Mr. T impersonators walking around with 10 or 15 on at one time :)

I just REALLY hope (and I agree, it probably won't happen...for obviou$ rea$on$) that they NEVER go to a policy like this at WDW. It'd just take a LOT of the fun out of it, IMO...
