HOLY 5 Year old killed by school bus

I am watching the 11:00 news....waiting for it to come up on it's website, and I'll edit and provide a link then...

here's what they said...it made me think.

Bus driver backed into a turn around....discharded the kids...waited until he believed they were all clear.....he started to pull out, the young child slipped on the ice, and slid under the rear tires of the bus. Child was rushed to Hospital, and pronounced dead upon arrival. We were in an ice storm ALL Day in Vermont today, so I can imagine the driveway was slippery!

This gave me the chills...our bus stops at the house just past ours...the bus stops kids get out, and then 2 kids walk into that driveway, my 2 walk back to our house....I just realized, this could have happened to my kids any day over the past 2 years....We will have a big discussion about this at breakfast tomorrow, and I guess I'll go back to meeting them at that driveway....

Just a sad story with something we should all think about if our kids ride buses.

What a tragic story. I hope the mother/father didn't see it happen. I found a link but it just has a passing mention. Sounds like you had rough weather in Vermont today.

Its now snowing! the interstates are shut down between quite a few exits....poor road crews!

I'm waiting for wnne.com to update their site, since thats where I heard it...didnt even thing of wcax, thats closer to barre,

Our school buses are NOT allowed to back up under any circumstances. EVER. Wow, this just makes me SO grateful for the careful and caring drivers we have had over the years!! How horrible for that family.

It was NOT the driver's fault, he was just as careful and caring as any other driver...the local police were stressing that fact...it was a freak accident, the boy slid down the driveway...he was out of harms way when the bus pulled out...

How very sad for that family.

Last fall we had a 6 year old boy in our area get run over and killed by a bus also.

They had hat day at school. Well the boy was off the bus and out of the way and his hat blew off and he ran back into the path of the bus to get it.

How horrible for both the family and the driver. When my children went to public school, the driver told us to have the children stand 10 feet back away from the stop and when she was stopped, then they could proceed. Being dropped off meant that the bus stayed until the children were at that same 10' mark and turned to wave.

Maybe this is too simplistic but then again we don't have seat belts in our school buses either (my big beef!)

I can't even imagine what pain that family is going through. I have a 5 year old son that rides on a bus every day. My prayers are going out to that family right now.

UPDATE.....

The boys mother did witness the event....along with some of his friends. the busdriver did not know that he had run the boy over, and continued on his run,

The police state they do not expect to file any charges.

The morning kindergarten was kept in school until the afternoon bus due to the icey roads....the boy was a morning student....


The principal from the school spoke on the news last night....
