Would you guys help me with something? DH and I have been renting alot of movies lately...not much time to actually go out to a movie because he's just started online classes to get his Master's degree. We usually start on one wall and work our way around the new releases. Well, I've noticed many horror movies and movies with pretty explicit sexual pictures/titles mixed in with the new releases. I spoke with an employee and suggested they could put those movies on shelves within their own genre so he gave me a number to call and make that suggestion. The rep I spoke to was very nice and understanding and told me that the more requests they get on a certain matter the more seriously they take it (obviously). Would any of you mind calling and making this same suggestion? I'm not sure I should post the # here or just PM it out...not sure what the guidelines are for that. PM me if you would like the #.

Thanks!

Nope, sorry. There already is a family friendly section, and if people want family movies, then IMO that's where people should have to go.

Wow...that's pretty harsh don't you think? I'm not asking for much and yes, you're right there is a family friendly section. Let me give you an example...we were browsing for Fat Albert...what's all around it but these horribly scary movies and disgusting sexual movies...what's so wrong with separating them????

Let me also say....that even if I don't want a movie for my FAMILY to watch why should I be subjected to all that disgusting material??

I dont find anything wrong with separating them as long as the whole library is alphabetical. And the more explicit stuff is right in the front of the store so I dont have to walk to the back!!!! :rotfl2:

Seriously - have you thought about trying NetFlix? I dont do it, but you may seriously consider it.

But if they are New Releases shouldn't they be in the New Release section? Or they could simply do away with the New Release section completely and put ALL the movies in their respective categories.

However, I used to own some video stores. Customers WANT a new release section. Most stores charge more for them than the category titles, which would be more difficult if they were mixed in with the older titles. The New Release section is what brings people into the store, and alphabetically by title is the easiest way for customers to find movies they want in each section, including the New Release section. From a business standpoint, video store profit margins are small, they are having to compete with more and more delivery systems (pay per view/ movies on demand / satellite delivery / movies on line) They really need that New Release section the way it is.

nkjzmom-
Hi
I work at Hollywood viedo.I am sorry you feel this way please do call our 1-800 number and see what they may do, but dont get your hopes up. All our new release wall is in Alphabetical order and we are more of a family store
we sell no Porn. ( but sometimes I say we have some movies close too it  ) I do know some movies are very graphic but we do have to please the taste of every Customer.
So please call our 1-877-325-6887

Some really nice enjoyable movies I am not sure if you like PG13
but heres some good ones for you and your family!!!

Just Like Heaven 2005 (PG-13) (A lonely architect falls for the spirit of a beautiful young woman who used to reside in his apartment before a fatal accident transported her into the netherworld.) A wonderful heartfelt movie!!

Zathura 2005 (PG)
(Two brothers engaged in a sibling rivarly find a box in the park that contains what they consider to be an old, dumb board game. They're about to dismiss it as nothing when they discover a second game within the box. This one takes them on a wild outer space adventure filled with action and peril. It's the experience of a lifetime, and it brings them closer together) A great family flick there is one cruse word in this movie the B word)

The Thing About My Folks 2005 (PG-13)
( Middle-aged Ben Kleinman's father shows up on his door and announces that his wife of 47 years has left him. Dad wouldn't have exactly won Father of the Year, but, when their car breaks down on a country road, Ben has two choices: he can either kill him or spend some quality time with the guy.) Very cute!

The Corpse Bride 2005 (PG)
(After a man jokingly puts a wedding ring on the finger of a skeleton, he gets much more than he bargained for—a dead woman appears to him as a ghost and claims she's his legal bride.) Cute and wierd Tim Burton movie!!!

Go to the video store alone or use Netflix.

I remember one scary picture....one with an eyeball really creeped my daughter out and she obsessed over it. There ARE a lot of offensive things on the shelves.

Now she either waits in the car with DH or hangs out with him in the kid section.

While I totally understand your point, I honestly feel like it is your job to separate your children, not the store's job to separate the videos.

I understand your concern.

However I work at Blockbuster, and with the layout and size of our store, it would be physically impossible to separate those movies out. We just wouldn't have any place to put them.

I know all of the Blockbusters in my district have the same issue. We don't even have room to display all of the older titles we have in stock.

I encourage you to call corporate - you never know!

Totally OT, but your puppy is absolutely adorable!!!!

HonestAbe...we tried Netflix a few years ago. Then we went through a stage where we just didn't have time to sit and watch many movies at all. We may have to think about going back to them.

disney50fam...thanks for the suggestions. We have seen most of those movies.

Freshtressa...I can keep my children away from the store altogether, but I don't want to see those things either.

I could use a delivery service for my movies, then while I'm homeschooling my kids I could have all my groceries delivered to my home. My DH will work from home and we'll lock out all questionable TV stations and be perfectly protected! But wait...instead of locking ourselves in our home just to be "safe" I'd rather try to affect a positive change in the world around me. I'll go to the video store and make suggestions, I'll send my kids to school and volunteer and substitute and spend time in their classrooms, I'll go to the grocery store and smile at people and help the old gentleman who can't find where he parked his car, DH will go to work and let coworkers know he's offended by their language/jokes...we'll still lock out questionable channels though!!! :teeth:

I guess I'm surprised more people didn't agree with me. Is there no one who is even willing to call the corporate number and support this opinion?

I would support you if it, honestly, jumped out at me. I was in Hollywood Video last week, with my DS (11). We walked the whole perimeter of new releases. Either I'm insane, numb, or both, but nothing jumped out at me as offensive. I must just glean over it and never give it a second thought.

Can you describe or tell me some of the titles you have problem with?

Christine...I didn't pay attention to their titles enough to recall them. I try not to even look at them. But as I've been thinking about this today I've decided to visit each of the video stores in my town and make note of how they display their new releases and what's included on those shelves.

They are there...believe me!!

I honestly don't see the problem. I guess I just never noticed this the last time I was actually in a video store. I subscribe to netflixs and don't have any kids so I guess it just doesn't affect me. I do think all the new releases should be together though, don't most stores have a seperate new release section for kids stuff so it's away from the others to begin with??

Next time you go, take a look between all the "regular" movies. Hollywood does have a half wall where they stock Disney and other animated movies. But to find most PG movies you have to walk past all of the new releases...for example, Kicking and Screaming, Fat Albert, etc.

Dsis was over tonight and we were talking about this and brainstorming ideas to suggest to them. First, keep all new releases together but put them into genres also. Second, (and we like this even better) place them in rating order. G on the left, leading into PG, then PG-13, then R, then the UR versions. I think that is completely doable. What do the folks who work for video places think?
