Do anyone of you still give "holiday" tips to your mailman, hairdresser, etc? how much do you normally give?

I give my mailman a gift, probably on the 23rd. I give him $10.

I'm getting a haircut Wednesday night and I'll probably give her a really good tip.

It is illegal for a mail carrier to accept monetary gifts. (I'm sure some do though) They can accept gifts such as edibles, cards, etc.

Traditionally, a service provider such as hairstylist gets an amount equal to the cost of one service (one haircut). These days that can be quite expensive! My whole family goes to the same stylist and I tip her the cost of my wife's and my haircut. I don't include the kids' haircuts in the tip amount.

There are rules for everyone under the sun and usually most newspapers will have a guide to those amounts around this week end and usually there will be one on the internet any day now.

There was just an article in our local paper about tipping and it's not illegal for the mail carriers to accept cash (though it is not encouraged) and they should not be accepting any gift, cash or otherwise, that has a value over $20. HTH!

Mail Carrier's can accept money or gifts of $20 or less.

I tip my mail carrier, newspaper carrier, and garbage person all $10. My regular hairdresser (when I have one) gets $20.

I gave my mail carrier a bag of homemade cookies the other day and he was quite appreciative.

I got my haircut today and tipped 40% instead of my usual 20%. I wanted to give him more, but I just couldn't afford it.

I have an appointment with my hairdresser tomorrow. I go about every 8 weeks for touch up and trim. It costs $91 plus tips. I can't imagine giving a Christmas gift equal to that. I don't spend that on my sisters. I'll probably give 40% instead of 20%.

Now THAT's a good gift.

I suppose if i had a mailcarrier that deserved a tip i would concider it. Im lucky i get my mail half the time and good luck trying to get him to take the Netflix dvds back with him, he will leave them in there for several days until i put a giant note on the box asking him to take them.

I read same article and stand corrected. Times have changed. Used to be a big no-no to give cash. I guess I'll have to eat that box of chocolates myself! LOL

We give the mail carrier a $20 Target card. We have 3 newspaper carriers. We send the everyday one a $20 check and the 2 part-time ones $10 checks (they put cards with their addresses in our papers). While this seems to get kind of costly, I don't tip them all year and I think that service workers are often undervalued in our world, so this is my chance to say "Thanks!"

I have a new hairdresser. I saw him last night for the second time. I was using a gift certificate for $150, so I tipped him $30. I don't know what the actual cost of the services were because I have never had him color my hair before, but it was less than $150 because I didn't owe more! Next year I will probably tip more because I'll have more of a friendship with him by then.

I don't tip mail or trash personnel. We don't have the paper delivered - we get a free daily paper from our leasing office.

I really have a problem with tipping mail carriers. They are federal employees with a great benefit package that will enable them to retire much earlier and with better retirement pay than either DH or me. The amount they are paid is a decent salary where we live, especially for a job that doesn't require a degree. Our garbage collectors, likewise, are city employees -- good benefits but not as good as the federal workers but lower pay.

If I were inclined to tip these folks, I would give the garbage people something. Our mailman is not someone I would honor with a tip.

I'm going to send our newspaper delivery person $10. She is great -- on time every day no matter the weather, careful where she puts the paper, etc. She is picking up those papers at 2 a.m. every single day. I'm guessing she either goes to another job or goes home to kids after she's finished. I've never met her, but she's been our carrier for a long time.
