Holiday commercial where man fakes death to get family home

I lost my parent very young (Mom was 39, I was 15) and this commercial didn't cause me any distress. I actually thought it was touching. The commercial reminded me that I should go visit those I love while I can because they may not be there.

The commercial is for a super market chain named Edeka.

And the fact that we don't know makes the commercial irrelevant.
In a weird way, it reminds me of the Publix holiday commercials that are about family and togetherness and in no way are about a grocery store at all. We recognize them instantly because of how they are done.

I wonder if this grocery store is similar in its holiday campaigns where this would resonate with their consumer base.

I thought it was in very poor taste. My first thought was, " I am so glad my family does not have to do that". My dad has lost both his parents, and we have lost my mom's mom. Every holiday people came as often as they could. I understood why they made the commercial, but I am not fond of it.

I think it is a beautiful commercial.
I am a nurse and see patients all the time whose kids have moved all over hinder and yon and never see their parents.

I will completely acknowledge that I have strong feelings in general about young adults who move for "better jobs" or "better weather" with little thought to what will become of their parents. I feel strongly that a lower paying/prestige job near family has much more eternal value than a higher paying/prestigious job further away.

I know everyone has different values, but when DH's company moved their NYC headquarters to NC, he tried hard (and was successful) to get a position in a NJ branch. The company offered a very nice relocation package, and he would have kept his NYC salary. We don't have a lot of extras, but the kids got to know their grandparents very well (my parents never missed a game, concert, play, etc. if they could help it). I remember my parents caring for their parents.

My 91 year old father passed away in March. The headstone was recently put up and I just saw it the first time recently. We spend Thanksgiving my my family so it was the first Thanksgiving without my dad Tuesday was what would have been my parents 57th anniversary of a happy marriage. I did get very teary eyed watching the commercial. In the end though, as touching as the commercial was, I didn't understand the connection to whatever the commercial was selling.

:flower3: I wish I'd had the foresight to understand this when I was 20 and all I could think of was "heading off to the city to seek my fortune"... Interestingly, both my (much) older siblings moved back to our hometown area upon their retirements to reunite with family. I'm still 20'ish years away from that season of life and by then it will be too late.

I think that the commercial was a little harsh but it touches me in spite of that. I always wonder about the lonely people that are out there and I think that the ad drives that message home. It's a good reminder to see those family members before it truly is too late and maybe even notice the lonely strangers.
