holding points for last minute Poly ressie?

I'm sure this has been answered before, so my apologies for my lack of search capabilites: We have never used our points for anything but DVC ressies, but have had to cancel a couple of recent trips due to family illness. Now we have points in holding for the first time, with an April use year. If I look on the Disney website and see availability for the Polynesian or another non DVC resort, does that mean I could use my holding points (before 3/31) for a ressie there if I'm willing to spend the points? Does availability on the Disney website mean that I could use DVC points for that room, or is that in another bucket? (I know I could get a DVC room but DD wants to stay at Poly)

I think that at this point you've run into the:

Rule of Four

You cannot book and travel on The Disney Collection, (excluding Disneyland© Resort Hotels in California and Tokyo Disney Resort®), Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection vacations within the last 4 months of your Use Year. However, you can travel in the last 4 months of your Use Year as long as you've booked your stay more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year.

Because the Disney Collection includes the Poly, but you're already inside the last 4 months of your UY.

So I think you'll have to book an actual DVC resort if you're heading to WDW.

Bumbershoot is correct - the Rule of Four applies.

You cannot stay at a non-DVC WDW resort during the last four months of your use year unless you make the reservation for that stay before the end of the eighth month of your use year.

So since you have an April use year and want to use points to stay at the Poly in December, 2012, January, 2013, February, 2013 or March, 2013, you would have had to make the reservation no later than November, 2012.

It can be tough to use points in holding. Sorry about the family's illnesses. Hope you can figure something else out to use the points

Thanks for the reminder about Rule of 4 - had read about it but never had a situation where it applied. We will use the the Holding Points for SSR and hope we don't have to cancel again.

Your other option, if you really really want to stay at the Poly, is to rent the points & use the cash to make your hotel ressie with CRO. SSR is really nice too, we stayed there last May.
