Can someone explain holding to me? I had to cancel a vacation at the lst minute and have 136 points that need to be used by the end of February.

From the Member Website:
A Holding Account is a "parking space" for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation that has been modified or cancelled 30 days to 1 day before your scheduled check-in date. Here are some guidelines regarding usage of Holding Account Vacation Points.
  • These Vacation Points can be used for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
  • These Vacation Points can also be used for a new reservation during your current Use Year in two ways:
    • For the Disney Collection* (except Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels), Concierge Collection*, or Adventurer Collection*, you can make the reservation more than four months before the end of your Use Year for a check-in date that is 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
    • For Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels, or the World Passport Collection, as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
    * Available when you purchase directly from Disney.
  • These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed.
  • These Vacation Points must be used by the end of the Use Year or they expire.

All points on a reservation go into holding if you cancel 30 days or less before arrival date. Those points then must be used during the same use year as the canceled trip and are subject to a 60 day reservation window in that you cannot call to reserve a room more than 60 days from date of arrival. Trying to get a room that close to arrival date can often be very difficult.

But since you are less than 60 days until those points expire, you can use them to book any DVC resort. You can't use them to book outside of DVC because you are in your last four months of your UY.

In this case the fact the points are in holding isn't an issue. The fact your points expire in less than 2 months is the what you are dealing with.

One thing that often isn't mentioned is that if the points on holding were current UY then they can be transferred if you haven't used your transfer for the year. They will keep their holding status though and still need to be used by the end of Feb. It's a limited number of people that might be interested in getting this type of points but adds another option.

And booking less than 60 days out really isn't that difficult as long as you are flexible with the resort. And if you have some flexibility with dates and room size you should be able to use the points.
