Isn't it funny, in 8th grade we were told that NO ONE uses the vosotros form, and not to learn it...guess the teacher was wrong! I grew up in San Jose CA and probably half of the kids in the class were from Mexican-born families (or Cuban) and no one corrected the teacher...) Never learned it in the next 3 years of Spanish either, taught by a Guatemalan born teacher. Weird.

We are not being taught vosotros either.

I am part spanish, so therefore I should be ashamed to admit that I don't know one word of it. OK, maybe I can count to 10 or so, but it is not much beyond that. I signed up to take it at our local college and it got cancelled due to lack of interest. Can't understand that, especially in this day and age. Still hoping to learn it someday, though.

According to DD16s Mexican BF, they don't use vosotros either. It's the equivalent of "ya'll" or "you guys", a familiar term. Fide's family uses Ustedes or some other term *he didn't tell me what term, didn't want to confuse me more* However, he did call his mother to help me with my homework--she is half-Spanish, half-Greek. She says vosotros is common in Spain. My professor has spent a lot of time in Spain, so I guess she's trying to make sure we know all the terms, not just the ones used in Central and South America.

On a related note, there are certainly lots of differences in the Spanish spoken in different countries. I have friends from all over South and Central America, as well as from Spain, and sometimes it's hard to believe they are speaking the same language. Sadly, Chilean Spanish is by far the hardest for me to understand, as it is full of slang and shortened words. Even other native Spanish speakers complain about it, and say they often have trouble following it!

Just double checking vosotros. I thought it was asistéis, not asistis. (I speak it a lot with my Spanish cousins, and this is how I've been pronouncing it - if I'm wrong I'd like to know. The less they have to laugh at me about the better. )

I think you're wrong. (Creo que estás equivocada )
In Spain, Argentina, Uruguay is "vosotros asistís", in all the other Spanish speaking countries is "ustedes asisten".

Just like English. If you go to Wales, Ireland, England, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, India, or anywhere in the Caribbean you'll hear all different kinds of English. They all have words and sayings that are different from American English. Heck, even in the U.S. you can hear different versions. I live in Georgia and sometimes people up North have a hard time with my Deep South accent. My grandparents lived in the Outer Banks, and if you've ever been there and talked with an old-timer, they have as near south UK accent as you'll ever hear in the U.S.
