We just got back recently from our 1st trip to
Disneyland and stayed at the HOJOs for 6 nights at the retro rate ($69 2 Queen Deluxe ) in Building 2 Garden Pool facing room. Overall we really enjoyed our stay there and will probably stay there again next time we are in Disneyland.
Pros: Friendly staff, comfortable beds, quiet rooms (except when fireworks were going off), bathrooms with double sinks, microwave and small refrigerator, Keurig coffee machine that came with 4 K-Cups (Green Mountain breakfast blend, I believe), free newspaper in the gift shop, plenty of dresser and closet space for family of 4, Pirates Cove play area for kids. Note:They would replenish the K-Cups when we did have our rooms clean.
We preordered groceries from Von's and had them deliver them to HOJOs the night we arrived. This worked great as we ate breakfast in our rooms and packed lunches and snacks to cut costs while in the park. FYI- the refrigerator is pretty small, about the size of a large microwave or tiny dorm fridge. It has one middle shelf in it where you can put groceries on the top or bottom. It would be difficult to fit a gallon of milk in it, but you can easily fit a half gallon on the side of the door. You may be able to fit two 1/2 gallons, one in the door and one laying on its side below the shelf. There is also a very small freezer "cubbie" in the top right corner of the fridge (worked great for ice packs and a few bottles of water). In the refrigerator we were able to fill it with a few water bottles, 1/2 gallon milk, package of string cheese, cream cheese, lunch meat, yogurt, gogurt, small creamer for coffee, large bag of sugar snap peas, and some apples.
Cons: There were only a few minor cons about the stay at HOJOs. First of all the TVs seem to be really dated, at least the one in our room. With park hours closing at 8pm, I like to watch a little bit of sports before headed to bed. I have real good vision and I couldn't even make out the score on any of the ESPN channels. Also sometimes when we tried to turn on the TV, we could hear it click on and then it would immediately turn off. Another nitpicky thing would be that there store doesn't carry milk bigger than a single serving, so it can get pretty expensive if you run out of milk for cereal. Finally the last thing which is probably more me than the room is the air conditioner. I like to sleep where the room is incredibly cold and have a constant white noise in the background. If I turned on the AC on its max setting it would stay on for awhile and then turn off. It was not a digital AC but had dials where you can turn to cold or colder. A few times in the middle of the night the AC would turn off and the room would slowly warm back up. The AC would not kick back on unless I toggled the dial back and forth between the heater and AC setting. I found myself waking up a few times throughout the night while I was there toggling the AC dials trying to get it to "reset". I could have left the fan on all night for the white noise but then the room wasn't cool enough.
Other thoughts: I honestly thought the walk would be somewhat tiresome after reading some posts on this site. However, I never had any difficulty with the walk and it personally would not affect my decision whether or not to stay there. In fact it seemed a lot longer to walk from attractions from the far end of Disneyland to the far end of California Adventure than it was to walk from HOJOs to Disneyland. I found it very pleasant, flat, and it was a plus being so close to Mimi's and McDonalds. We went back and forth a couple of times during the day and never dreaded it. However, we did have strollers for our 4 and 2 year old and could see how it would be difficult for them to walk back and forth.
Overall I enjoyed my stay at HOJOs and will probably stay there again next time I visit.
