HOJO or Carousel

I have emailed Lorealle to see if we would be able to get a premium Disney view room...there aren't any right now so I have to keep checking.

:cutie: Thank you so much for those kind words! :cutie: I LOVE THE DISBOARDS! :goodvibes

Definitely keep checking in with me to see if those Disney View Rooms become available! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Its incredible how I always find that people choose Hojo over the Carousel. The pool being the #1 selling feature, apparently bigger rooms but the customer service always seems the same for both places. The Carousel through reviews I have heard have never really been bad - the continental breakfast (But what hotel serves really awesome top quality gormet breakfasts).
I always love reading these kinds of threads because I just think its fascinating what people find as a priority for hotels/motels etc when its just a place to shower and sleep.
I've read quite a few horror stories about Carousel regarding quality of rooms and breakfast and not getting their room problem solved or fixed. Thus far I've only heard of minor issues regarding Hojo like people not liking the soap they had in their room or noise on the freeway side (turn on the room air, it creates white noise and you won't hear the freeway when you do that) or the vaulted ceiling letting in too much light. The distance issue is subjective so I don't read too much into that, espcially since I've done the walk many times.
IMO, you can't put a price on customer service. Hojos has gone over and above the call of duty for me and my family in years past when we needed assistance with things that wasn't their problem. But they gladly helped... and we don't forget that. Their level of customer service is something other motels in the area would be well served to pay attention to. Our room was always spotless, no dirty carpet, no stains, no mold or mildew growing in the bathrooms, no bugs, no holes in the sheets or stains on the bedding, buildings are safe. Need I say more?
I am one of those people who tend to think, "It's just a place to sleep." But they really impressed me at Hojos. Actually, they impressed me enough that I've stayed there and paid $129 + when I couldn't get the Entertainment deal. I want to know that if I have a problem with anything that someone will be there, happy to assist me, and work with me to find a solution. I've heard horror stories about some of the other motels' lack of customer service and indifferent personnel -- not to mention the cleanliness issue...:scared:

ITA with DisneySuiteFreak! My first choice is always on-site, my second choice is always the HoJo. If we know we can't possibly do on-site I just call or email Lorealle and see if she can help me. Which reminds me, I need to email her soon........lol
For me it's not "just a place to sleep" it's a place to feel safe while away from home and to have my kids feel safe. It's attention to detail and the "little things" that make me want to come back. As often as we go it's nice to stay someplace we feel comfortable, someplace we are familiar with. And maybe because we go so much when the weather is warmer the kids like to take a swim break, they will love the new pool at the HoJo so that will bring us back too.
There are lots of reasons to stay at other hotels but honestly, the HoJo is off site hotel that we compare to the resort hotels, so we tend to stay there when we can.

This trip (in 2 days!) we got a free hotel stay for 3 nights at the Crowne Plaza (timeshare deal), we could have stayed there for our extra night but we didn't want to, instead we are staying the 4th night at the HoJo, hopefully in the same room we had last time, because we loved it!! :)

Yay for HoJos!!!! I haven't even stayed there yet - I'm booked for Dec - and I already feel I'm highly in favor of HoJos, thanks to all of the great reviews from Disers. Loreal has been fabulous responding to all of my emails, then booking me when I called. Thanks!!!

I haven't heard anyone rave about any other hotel in the area the way HoJos is raved about.

We stayed at HoJo last year. We just booked the 3-bedroom view suite at the Carousel for this year. It's the only room at Carousel with view of the park/fireworks. Here's what I know from experience and extensive research on both places:

HoJo probably one of the most "consistent" of all the hotels there as far as knowing what you are going to get - a decent sized room that's a little dated/worn around the edges with good customer service and best pool area for any of the non-Disney hotels within walking distance. Room door to maingate turnstiles we found was about a 15-17 min walk. with a 5 and 6-yo. Any farther than that and I think you'd want to take a shuttle. Make sure to get a room with fireworks view (Disney View) as that is what I consider HoJo's biggest asset next to its pool area. Don't be surprised though if your view is partially blocked by a tree, but it will still be a decent view (tree is narrow.) HoJo is close to the freeway but it seems the building is constructed in such a way (concrete walls maybe?) that inside the room is pretty quiet in our experience and apparently others?

Carousel Inn is as close as you can get to the maingate, probably about as close as the Grand Californian. I guess it is a about a 6-7 min walk hotel door to the turnstiles. HoJo is a good additional 7 or 8 min. but still close. However if you go back and forth between the parks or Downtown Disney and the rooms 2 or 3 times a day, even for an in-shape adult I was wishing we were in one of the closer places right across the street when walking back to the hotel. But the HoJo walk is definitely not bad, very doable, just tiring at the end of the day.

Both hotels are probably in the top 5 rated hotels within a short walk (15 min or less) of the maingate that you don't have to take a shuttle.

The only thing that I see consitent as far as negative remarks about the Carousel is that it sounds like the rooms have poor insulation (more noise from rooms and street if you are near the end of the building) and that the dining room doesn't have enough seating area unless you get to breakfast early. Other than that, I've found most people rate the Carousel pretty consistently high. As far as short walking distance, I'd say Candy Cane (no fireworks view), HoJo, and Carousel would argueably be three of the best choices there (although Candy Cane has a shuttle too.)

We chose Carousel instead of HoJo as we wanted to be even closer to the maingate this time (we show up early to get into the parks) and we have a large party so it would be neat to all stay in the same room (3 bedrooms! But only 1 bath!)

However, I'm concerned about a few things regarding the Carousel, specifically the view suite.

Unless we get room 400, right below the restaurant, the view is going to be partially block by the tree (room 300) or by the tree and partially horizontally by the wall around Disney (room 200, 2nd floor). I doubt the hotel can guarantee we'll get room 400?

Secondly, the noise is bugging me as it says you get both the noise from outside and other rooms and the noise from the dining room upstairs in the case of room 400 (if you don't get up really early in the morning.)

Thirdly, we have 2 small children, and 5 adults in our party. Sharing 1 bathroom is going to be a challenge but kids take baths at night and women can do hair drying and makeup in the bedrooms? Is there a bathroom in the lobby for the men to stink up?

One thing a lot of people don't know is that the Howard Johnson actually has a 1 bedroom suite. I've been told by the hotel they have only one of them in the hotel (although I find that hard to believe). You can only book it calling the hotel directly. But it wouldn't be big enough for all of us, we'd have to get another room and it couldn't be adjoining. But Hojo pool is much nicer and rooms are better insulated - essentially no potential surprises at HoJo. I think Carousel Rooms are actually suppose to be a little nicer as I think they got a face lift inside more recently than the worn HoJo? HoJo is still clean/decent though.

So at this point we are on the fence whether to stick with the closer 3-bedroom view suite at Carousel, or just get 2 adjoining fireworks view rooms at the HoJo. The other downside is it's two couples (me my wife and my folks) and my sister, so my sister will have to share a hotel room with my folks versus having her own room at the Carousel since we could put the kids on the sofa sleeper at the Carousel and its a 3-bedroom room!

I need help making a final decision. My gut wants to try something new, deal with the 1 bathroom and stay at Carousel, but I feel I may regret it if we don't get room 400 or the noise is too loud (although most all of us sleep like logs and spend little time in the hotel room.)

Last trip we had no time to ever make use of HoJo pool, to busy eating or going to the parks. Probably won't use pool either first time so the fact Carousel has tiny pool isn't an issue with us.

Any insights?

Consultant, when are you going? The HoJo is rennovating their main pool area to add a really cool Pirate theme with ship and slide. It won't be done until July, but it may make a difference in your decision making process.

We're not going until October but like to plan way ahead. Lat October. Like I said, we live on the West Coast. When we go to Disneyland, it's just that, to go to Disneyland. When we want to go somewhere to lie by the pool or beach, it definitely isn't going to be Anaheim (usually Hawaii.) But that is cool they are doing the Pirate thing. With insurance issues these days though it means the slide won't be much of a slide. Maybe I'll be surprised what the end up with?

I'm still waiting to hear back from the Carousel about the ability to guarantee room 400 or 300. If they can't do that, then we'll probably go for HoJo.

Even through when I booked I didn't know anything about an Entertainment Card...the things I've learned here. I email Lorealle to see if it is possible to get the rate for my stay (9 nights) and she has said she already booked it for me..she is amazing. 7 of my nights are available for the entertainment rate and that saves me $350.00!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I'm still hoping to get a Disney view room...but even if I don't I'm still happy with the garden pool view.

Ya gotta love that kind of customer service. Lorealle is incredible! :thumbsup2

Consultant, I disagree 100% about the walk time. Maybe because your kids are smaller than mine but it only takes us about 7 minutes to get there. I also would like to mention that our room at the HoJo was not shabby at all, we were really pleased with how neat and clean it looked. there were trees in our way but they were very skinny so it didn't interfere with our view of the fireworks at all. Also, if you were to get the Ent Rate at $59/$74 a nite you could get 3 rooms, all adjoining. I would really sugget you call Lorealle at the HoJo Anaheim and see what she can do for you. You may be really surprised. :)

pixiewings71- Was that 7 minutes to the actual gates or to across the cross walk on Harbor?

When we stayed at the Tropicana last year it was about 5-7 minutes to the actual gate. We aren't super fast walkers, but not real slow either. So I'd be surprised if we'd make it to the actual gate from Hojo's in 7 minutes! I'm planning for about 12-15 from what I've seen driving by there. Shoot after my 3rd day it may be 20! LOL For 7 we'd probably really have to be hauling! LOL

Consultant, did you see this thread? http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1745747&page=2 Dangermouse has photos of the suite and if you scroll down the page, I posted pictures of my DL view room in BLd 1. I don't know when they last totally renovated the rooms at the hotel, but my room was very fresh, clean, and didn't look dated at all. They just finished upgrading all the beds to the pillow top mattresses, and all the DL view rooms now have Micros and Fridge.
As I said, my carpets were clean, bedding was clean and didn't look faded or trashed, wall coverings were nice, drapes, nice, tile in the bathrooms were clean, no mold/mildew in tubs. Everything was very clean. I have stayed at Hojos once a year since 2001 and have never had a problem. And like I said earlier, I'll stay there and pay full rates if I can't get the lower rates, because you can't put a price on good customer service and safety. I cut through Mimi's parking lot to the sidewalk along Harbor (although I wouldn't recommend it for you since you have young ones) and it takes me and my family about 7 minutes to get to the front security checkpoint. Since I usually have to stand in lines, I don't count how long it takes to get to the turnstiles. (I usually go during peak holiday season.) I am not a power walker by any means. However, I don't have young ones traveling with me either.

I should say 7-10 minutes depending on the crosswalk wait time. And we don't walk down the side of Harbor with all the restaurants unless we are planning to stop and eat at Mimi's or McD's. We cross at the Manchester crosswalk, cut to the right after the bus parking, walk through the taxi pickup/dropoff and thru the shuttle area and to the security tables. That's walking with the girls in the morning and at night. When we walk down the other side of Harbor (walking towards DL this is the left side of the street) it always takes us longer to get there. I'm not sure why but it does.

I'm gonna have to make sure and go that way, hopefully that will help us cut down on the time!

If fireworks view is an issue- while we were at the Carousel they opened up the breakfast nook about 15 minutes before the fireworks. I didn't do this but my Aunt did who didn't want to fight the crowds. She said there was only one couple up there with her.

Stayed at both. Most of the time we were in the parks, so just used the room for sleep! We liked the close location of Carousel, and the room/grounds of the Howard Johnson's. Never used the pools.

Have fun!!

DisneySuiteFreak,

Awesome thread you pointed me towards. People should upload their photos and comments to www.tripadvisor.com if they have the time. I find it has the most resources for travel research.

It appears HoJo did a minor room renovation since we were there in Feb 2007??? New mattresses and linens primarily or did they really do it up with new carpets, paint, bath fixtures etc. Or did the renov. take place before 2/07 and we just got a room that wasn't renovated yet? (Or maybe my memory about the room has failed me.)

Kids are older now. The extra 5-7 min or so walk I should really not be concerned about, especially already having done it. We cut across the parking lot too. Plus the consistent complaint about the Carousel is noise both from other rooms and from all the traffic on Harbor Blvd. If you get a fireworks view room at HoJo you are on the opposite side of the building as the freeway but away from that crowded mess of hotels near the crosswalk on Harbor where Carousel and Tropicana and all those others are. Considering my sister is going for sure now, (5 adults, 2 children). I'm thinink HoJo (one suite and one regular room) is going to be better than the closer, less quite 3-bedroom suite with only 1 bathroom (with 1 sink) at Carousel.

Anyone agree or disagree based on my circumstances?

Be aware that Trip Advisor has a lot of problems with Hotels posting their own rave reviews... They are supposed to be addressing it but haven't as yet.

We found the hotel very quiet, there is no road noise as the Hotel has a very narrow frontage, only the view suites are near the road, I have heard of complaints about freeway noise on one of the HoJos buildings...

For me next year it will come down to price, who has the better price on the day....
